Took my Norwegian 98 out for a run today. I had loaded up some ammo for a BSA M1917 sporter and could not hit a barn wall with it. I had installed an old Weaver K4 on the M1917, fired some factory Federal, and seemed that it did well. Next time out I tried some reloads (pic included of load, bullet, etc.) and couldn't hit anything. I figured the scope had gone haywire. Next time out, I used the iron sights. Same, couldn't hit anything.

So, today, I had some Hornady 165's with the same powder charge. The M1917 did much better. Ammo problem!

The 98 did a bit better with the first batch (lead bullet). Back to the lab to find a better mixture for the old M1917.

When I took the scope off, I found that the base holes were drilled all ####-eyed, so iron sights will have to do.

With factory milsurp ammo, the 98 is a tack driver in the right hands.

A pic of the 98 and the load that does not work for the M1917:

I see you're using ammomart #44 powder.

Every bit of that stuff went bad on me. Before it was noticeable it gave me erratic results and caused some rusting of the bores.

Be careful with that stuff.

I wasn't the only person on this site to have issues with that particular powder.

Nice looking rifle.

I no longer have a Norwegian 98. I had one that the Norwegians had rebarreled for the 7.62 Nato round as well. Neither of them would shoot cast lead well, so you're not alone.

Nice looking Norwegian K98k! What's the year/code on it?

I don't have it with me at the moment, but I think it is BCD 44. Does that sound right? As I said above, it is a tack driver with good American surplus.

I'll check tomorrow and confirm.

Rather odd. I loaded some up for an old .303 and it did just fine. Will need to check more closely. The loads did seem to work okay with the 98. I forgot to take my stapler so I was using targets that had holes pre-installed. :p

mine's a bnz 41. The Norwegians picked pre-43 rifles mainly. The three numbers on the bolt stem should match the last three numbers of the Norwegian serial number on the receiver flat. No insult intended.

Mine doesn't. So, according to some, this rifle is nearly worthless. :p Maybe I'll just make a lamp stand out of it. Still shoots like a darn, though. :)

So What if the bolt doesn't match, if it headspaces ok then its a shooter not a pristine collectors piece.
That line comes from someone who is trying to buy it from you to get the price down.
They certainly change their tune if they are selling one.
There weren't many released, I was told the UN persuaded the Norwegians to destroy them.

^^Yeah. I'm well aware of that line. I get disgusted at some dealers at gun shows. Some of them have no idea what they are talking about, and come up with the most ridiculous horse crap. I don't get all stewed up over a rifle that doesn't have every little piece matching. The rifles I've bought over the years are ones I wanted to own because I liked them. The history, the style, the caliber all play into what gets my attention. :)
