I've recently come into possession of a sporterised Engineers Krag, and have decided to attempt a full(ish) restoration over the winter.

So far I have managed to get a buttplate, and the two metal bands (front and middle).

Without any prospect of finding myself an original stock set I've set about to make one of my own. I have a general idea of the overall shape and length in relation to the metal (the sporter stock it came with also helps) but what I do not have is some specifics, regarding the upper handguard.

How were they attached? Was there a lip and a ring at the knox of the barrel? Was it just held on by the two bands? Did it have a spring-clip like the No 1 Mk 3 Enfields?

Anyone who might have some information available I would greatly appreciate it.

Stocks seem scarce, found a maker in Virginia that states you can create a carbine stock from one of their longer ones.

You have to add the www stuff... :)

Have no idea how they attach, I am thinking your model may have been full wood...

Those are VERY nice... and VERY expensive, wow!

Unfortunately they seem to be only models used by the USA when they were using the Krag Rifles. I am uncertain whether or not they will fit a Norwegian Krag, (Boyds makes one for the US Krags, that is not interchangeable either) and wouldn't want to spend the cash and be let down...

I think hey can be used on yours but have to be reshaped and inletted. Expensive and involve work...

May be easier to source a donor that have good wood... i just saw a stock on a norwegian site, but sold in July... :(

Was your rifle the model 1897 engineer carbine or the model 1904?

It was the 1897. Serial # is too high to be a 1904.

Personally I would not be adverse to using either stock on it, as the two models, gun-wise, are more or less the same, and only differed in stocking, and the presence of slings and swivels. That, and any military configuration would be preferable to the sporter it has.

The 1897 only has one barrel band and shorter wood. I have the 1896 Cavalry carbine which was the same as the 1897 engineer except for a difference in sling swivel locations.

Yeah. And the 1904 Engineer is, metal-wise the same gun, but with a longer stock and handguard.

How is the upper handguard attached on yours?
