I picked up a new to me Krag awhile backmade in 1917.
This is my second, the first being made in1943, during Nazi occupation of Norway. The 1917 has one small swastika on it.
They both have the same front & rear sights (though the 1917 has been somewhat mutilated) I was told the front sight is of German design, and both barrels have be shortened identically.
I am wondering if both barrels would have been shortened by the Germans, or perhaps later?
The 1917 has also had two holes drilled and tapped into the receiver. I am wondering if these may have held a side mounted scope....?
Any thoughts or identification data shared would be greatly appreciated !

The drilled holes are probably for some type of rear mounted aftermarket peep sight.

The Swastika marking is actually not related to the Third Reich, and is most likely a barrel manufacturers marking...

The barrels being shortened during sporterization most likely had to have the mod done to the front sights to correct for the new bullet impact point. This was probably not a German modification, and most likely a post war sporterization by the importer? (Not 100% sure though)

The Germans marked their captured rifles (Beutewaffen) differently (usually a depot mark on the wood at the wrist) and sometimes not at all actually.

Your 1943 dated one was of course made under Nazi occupation and was one of about 1000 (?) made. Very rare. Please post pics of that one.

Hope this helps.

BTW: The 6.5x55mm Krags are a pleasure to shoot! Enjoy! :)

I have a "Stomperud" Krag, and I'd like to see your 1943 as well - at least one full length pic would be great.
