norwegian stock finish any ideas ?

i an restoring a bubba norwegian 6.5x55 krag carbine m1912, ..........my new repro military stock is on the way.

any advise on what stain or finish these old krags had on the wood ?

have heard of tung oli and boiled linsed oil ..........and heard of the russian shellac finish .

want it to look at least proper if not perfect.

Give me a bit and I'll get some close up/detailed pictures of both the M1894 and M1912 original finish. As a short answer, the M1912/16 is a fairly yellow wood with a True Oil type of "varnish".

If you use tung oil. Make sure to wipe any excess off during applications. Other wise it will not cure and peel off.

ok thanks ive heard of boiled lindsed oil, tung oil and true-- oil...........all similar ??

all go on work same basic way ??

All these are different. "TruOil" is sold by Birchwood Casey and meant for sporting rifles....develops a high sheen and won't look military. The majority of military rifles are done with linseed oil....takes many coats to get it to look good....look at an Enfield and if you're happy with the finish then use it. Tung oil will generally build up and will give you some waterproofing. Sets quicker than linseed. I'd use the linseed oil.

For stain....it depends on the wood. Use an alcohol soluble aniline dye in between oil coats. You can work it into the finish until you get the desired result.
