Hey all, so I did my first IPSC match this past weekend and I was having a problem with nose up FTF on my CZ Shadow SP-01. Normally I use 124 gr RN for practice, but for the match I was using Federal 147 Flat nose rounds. I've shot over 500 of these things before at the range with never an issue, but I had it jam up on me 5 times during the match.
Unfortunately I wasn't keeping track of things during the day, but now when I look back on it the only thing that was new is a new magazine I had recently purchased.
Is it possible that because the mag is brand new that the spring is too tight and is jamming the bullet too fast during the cycle? All my other mags are a few years old and well broken in.

It's possible. If you have tested the new bullet weight of ammo and it functioned fine, then definitely do some range testing with that ammo and new mag. One other thing is that timers often cause malfunctions in equipment that was working fine during casual use.

The lips on the mag could be too wide. Load some rounds into a good mag and some into that mag. Use your thumb to try pushing up on the nose of the bullet and see how well they are controlled by the lips. If the bullet goes vertical very easily then you need to tighten things up. I've had this happen on mags due to dropping them on the concrete floor during indoor matches

What brand of new mag? Gun is otherwise stock and unmolested? Jams the second round? If you were seating the full mag in the gun with the slide closed it may not have caught the mag catch, sure the first round gets loaded but the mag drops a bit and its not picking up the next round correctly.

Ok well I've figured out the problem. It's the ammo. during a match last night it twice failed to load the first round during the LAMR command. I took a closer look at a few rounds afterwards and it finally clicked in my brain that the edges of the nose are a fair bit sharper than they should be.
Guess I'm going back to my 124gr RN.

If you could post some pictures of the rounds? I have fired a few boxes of all sorts of 147 grain through both my shadows including i think your federal rounds, and even one box of Remington 147 that had been driven over with something, or the seating depth was progressively shorter from one end to the other. Chewed through a few boxes of 147 hst's amongst gold dot hp reloads. I'm wondering if there is a burr or chip out of your extractor? If its ran 500 of these before something has changed.

Yeah I was thinking that something has definitely changed. I was thinking it could be the extractor or possibly the feed ramp needs a bit of a polish. This isn't a new Shadow either, it's got at least 4000 rounds through it, so it could need a bit of TLC.
I'll try and post some pics tonight.

But stock springs ect in it?? I was thinking if your firing pin was protruding forward/not returning that might hang it up too. Might be worth it to pull the pin and cycle some live ammo through it to see what the heck is going on. Also when the slide stop breaks it will often cause the gun to hangup too. I'm sure you will figure it out!

Yes everything is stock in it. I'm not so confident in my troubleshooting abilities to start changing out OEM stuff for performance springs and pins etc.
I'm going to pull the extractor and firing pin out tonight and clean the crap out of it, and give the feed ramp a little polish job, and then hit the range on the weekend and see what happens.

I've got another match next week, and it would be really nice if I can get my times to match up with reality, minus the time it takes me to keep clearing out jams every stage !

OK so I cleaned the pistol to within an inch of its life, replaced the extractor and the spring, which both looked a little worn down, and I put in a new recoil spring, and I also polished up the feed ramp as an extra measure.
Problem solved. I've gone through about 300 rounds at the range and not a single issue so far. I'm so happy !

Auggie,
Did you notice the yellow ones are the worst ones ?
