Nosler Ballistic tips OK for Moose?

Well, I am getting a load ready for moose camp to find out all I have for bullets are 165gr Ballistic tips :mad: . I have been busy relaoding for my 204, I never checked to see what other bullets I had to buy. :rolleyes: . I wont be able to get to the local gunshop for a couple weeks, and by that time it will be too late. The gun is a 30-06. Well what do you think?
 
If you don't have time to build up loads, get a couple boxes of Federal Premiums loaded with 165gr or 180gr Nosler Partitions. Express delivery if you have to. Sighted 2" high @ 100 yards and you're good to go...
 
Ive found them to work well for whitetails but they seem to be very explosive and don't retain much weight. Id order some accubonds or even better yet some TSX's

Ok after I did some diggin, I found 22 165 grn speer boat tails. Now I use to load these but cant remember how well they shoot, and what powder I used. Anybody got any sudgestions? Oh I got H-335 for powder H-4895 reloader 10X, IMR 4895. I supose if I have to, I will try and mail order some bullets tomorow and hope they come by the weekend...

I don't have much experience with ballistic tips, because I took an immediate hate to them. They fragment way too easy. (I was shooting 308 and they were also 165gr bullets)

Be careful where you shoot, because they will damage a lot of meat if you take a shoulder shot.
 
I would not use the BT on moose... they expand way too quickly, can't even get a pass though on a deer with the 200gr BT in my 338win. For moose I'd use SGK, failsafe, partition, etc...
 
I dunno. But I had a buddy who killed near on a dozen moose with 150gr. Bal. Tips out of his 7mm rem. mag.
Now I agree that there are better pills for the job but a dozen gut piles later it's hard to argue whether they will kill a moose. And I certailnly cant comment on every kill but I was present for at least a third of them and the meat damage was certainly no more excessive than critters I've seen shot with other bullets and calibers, and as far as I can recall no bullets were recovered, all passed throughs.
Now you have a mix of opinions on bullets just like comments on pickup trucks, electronics and the like, you have to put the filters on and sort the stuff out on your own.

don't use them, they are for smaller game. I used the 180's when they first came out. On 1 moose the 1st bullet hit it's antler & blew apart. When butchering we found pieces of bullet everywhere (front shoulder, leg, hind leg). Now I use Partition Protected Point
 
I use 150 gn bts in my 7 mag and all are pass throughs. I have never found a bullet nor fragments. I dunno. I load em fairly hot though. If your confident in how they shoot i would use em. I wouldnt use anything your not familiar with on short notice.
 
I hosed a bull at 140 yds in the brisket a few years back and it was a bang flop.

Bullet never exited but fragmanted something wicked.

They'll do the job alright and if it was my only choice I'd use them again.

Since have gone to loading interbonds and love them.
 
I have taken eight elk and two moose with the 180gr balistic tip out of my 300ultramags.However the jacket on the 180gr .308" ballistic tip is about twice as thick as the jacket on the 165gr ballistic tip.
 
I don't even think Nosler thought the BT was for bigger game till you hit the 338 (I have never recovered one with my 338), it could work, your not going to have an impact at greater than 2900 fps, but you'd would still be forced to rib shots only.

This would be the time to spend the extra on overnight express.
 
I shoot two mule deer with 200gr BT that had a muzzel vel of about 3000fps. One and about 75m and the other at about 125m.... both bullets exploded on contact and didn't travel for more than about 6" into the deer. I had been planning a long distance hunt but tripped on the deer on my way into the hunting area each time hence the short range.
