Hey guys, I bought two boxes of nosler brass for my 6.5x55, as I needed more brass in a hurry and couldn't find any Papua or Norma brass locally. Anyone know who makes it? I've read that nosler uses Norma brass for 6.5x55 but I can't verify it. I know for 375 ruger the nosler brass is just rebadged hornady brass which is junk but I'm assuming that's because hornady is the only brass maker for 375 ruger.

Also who makes the brass in the nosler trophy grade loaded ammo in 6.5-284? I bought a few boxes just to pull the 129grain long range accubond since I ran out of those too. I've got no use for the brass and it's never been fired or anything so I was gonna sell it.

Thanks

As you have noted Nosler does not in fact manufacture brass cases, they purchase, prep, weigh and repackage for resale adding about 200% margin on. I know that their 300 Wby are R-P brass, and I would hazard an educated guess that their 6.5-284 would be Norma as likely would their 6.5X55...........I can't see them purchasing Lapua, where all the prep is done already and they run about the same price or higher. Even with a significant discount for bulk I don't see enough profit in it for them..........hence my guess of Norma. I don't think Rem makes 6.5X55 and I know they don't make 6.5-284, so safe bet would be Norma............

R-P does in fact make 6.5x55 Brass, Doug, since I have 100 rounds of the stuff. :)

However, Norma would be a good guess as per other chamberings that are less common domestically.

I acquired some Nosler brass in 270 [I know, I know, lol] I found it about as soft as Federal brass, and was totally disappointed with it.

Not all Norma brass is soft. My 308 Norma cases stand up quite well to stiff loads, and I had some Norma 220 Swift brass that also stood up well.

But 6.5x55 Norma brass opens primer pockets with loads that Lapua brass or Winchester brass tolerates nicely.

I do not think the Nosler brass is worth the premium price they charge, others may feel differently, of course.

Regards, Dave

Thanks for the input guys. I'll run some hot loads through this brass and see how it holds up. If it's scheisse then I'll order some lapua brass.

I wonder if it really is norma brass. All of the Norma that I've seen looks more like red brass and this stuff is definitely yellow brass. Who knows.

There was a thread before either on cgn or hunting BC where a guy found a piece of federal brass mixed in with his newly bought Nosler.

I read awhile back in reloader magazine that they buy federal and weight sort it and chamfer and debur it,I have used it quite a bit and I think it is over priced also, althow I did find a box of 30-06 at WSS awhile back for $55 I necked it down for my 6.5-06 and it has bin alright but I am going to get Lapua or norma next batch.

Well I got the load figured out. 48 grains of RL17 got me around 3030-3050 fps with the 127 LRX and a coal of 3.170" in my t3 and a 3 shot group of 0.412" centre to centre. I know 5 shot groups are better, or even 10 shot, but for me this is my best group I've ever shot, I'm not as good a shot as many of you and for hunting this will do. The 129 accubond gave me about 0.6" for a three shot group at almost the same powder charge, and at 47.0 grains of rl-17 I got a 4 shot group of around 0.6" with the LRX. These tikka T3s can shoot.

These are stout loads and the brass looked fine but I'll see how they measure after firing and how the primer pockets hold up. Thanks for your help guys, I'm pretty happy with my shooting so here are some pics:

I'm pretty sure nosler 300 wby brass is made by Norma. The stuff I have weighs identical to my Norma 300 wby brass.

Wanna buy 2 more boxes........the stuff I bought maybe 4 years ago is lighter yellow and weighs the same as 3 R-P cases that someone gave me.

I just weighed 1 noser 1f and deprimed case and 1 norma 1f and deprimed case. 226.2gr and 226.4gr respectively.

Norma on the left and Nosler on the right. My Nosler brass was bought 2 months ago and came in a black box.

It's a well-known fact that Norma makes most of the brass with the Weatherby headstamp.

As a matter of a fact, Weatherby ammo was loaded in Sweden for decades. I am not sure of the more recent offerings from Weatherby, though.

Of course, other manufacturers are now loading ammo designed for the W'by magnums.
