I have been using the Nosler 257 caliber 85 grain Ballistic silver tips bullets with good success ,, I recently bought some 257 bullets off the EE and got some Nosler Ballistic tips also 85 gain.. the only difference I can """SEE""" is the silvertips version is of course silver and the ballistic tips are blue ,, If yuo google either of these they say they are a varmint bullet the explodes on contact, so I guess my question is ,, is there any difference

Are they ballistic tip hunting or ballistic tip varmint. 2 different bullets

How about the answer direct from Nosler.

What is the difference between the Ballistic Tip® and the Combined Technology® Ballistic Silvertip® (CTBST)?

Structurally, they are the same bullet. The only difference between the two is that the CTBST has a silver colored tip and a black, Winchester® Lubalox® coating on the exterior of the bullet

Thank you .. I was on the Nosler page a few times and looked up both bullets and even Goggled the question .. BUT did not even think too click on the FAQ ::))) But i did look at alot of The FAQ when i did get there

I like to sacrifice one bullet to the belt sander gods, then leave it in with the others so that I have a reference/conversation piece.

7.62x39 hornady sst

Czech surplus 7.62x39

Now THAT is something I'll do. I already do it for cartridge cases, and can't imagine why I didn't think of this.

This is the truth! All the first generation Ballistic Tips had a relatively "thin" jacket and a solid base with a short boattail. They tended to be quite fragile at high velocity.

Now, the Varmint BallisticTips are like that, but the hunting variety have a much heavier jacket that holds the bullet together better.

AAMOF, the jacket on the "Hunting" Ballistic Tip and the Accubond look quite similar, when sectioned. Of course, the AB is bonded, so a tougher bullet.

Dvae.

I use too hunt deer with the original winchester silvertips and they were a meat wrecking bullet too say the least .. Burt they were a deer stopper,, ,, I have not seen a original silver tip with the flat nose in a long time

OHH Yes those old silver tips I used them in a 30-06 for moose 180gr and they did put down the moose quickly granted there was a bit of meat to cut out around the wound but they did a great job.
I haven't used the new hunting Bal tips or the bergers yet, but will down the road.
Enjoy
