i just bought some nosler custom brass to load for my winchester m70 featherweight in .308. i used varget powder, fed 210m primers and barnes 150gr tsx. accuracy was good averaging about 1" groups at 100yds. before loading i noticed a couple of things when inspecting the brass. first thing i noticed is the inconsistant flash hole deburring. some had a nice small chamfer while others had a very large chamfer. way more than i put in when doing it myself on "cheap" remington or win brass. the other thing was primer seating being inconsistant in both seating pressure required and seating hieght. i did not weigh the brass to see how consistant that is compared to the cheaper stuff. bullet seating pressure seemed pretty even.

My top 3 choices would be:

1. Lapua
2. Lapua
3. Hmmmmm....tough one......but I'll have to go with Lapua on this one.

Nosler Custom is 2x the price of the other top brands (Norma and Lapua). I weight sorted 600 Lapua 6BR cases into 2 - 1grn batches 4 boxes from 1 lot and 2 from another, with less than 25 cases that fell outside the 2 weights.......this shows the consistency of their brass.

I do have some Nosler 280AI brass, and while it is slightly soft, the dimensions are very consistent. The cost was slightly more than for most of my Lapua brass, but nowhere near 2x the cost.

If you visit a site like say, hirschprecision.com, you'll notice that the price of Lapua Brass is rather affordable, and undisputably the best. Remember, the prices quoted for Lapua are for 100 pieces vs. the usual 50.

$71/100 works out to $35.50/50. I think you'll find that to be quite competetive compared to what you pay for factory winchester/remington, and a lot cheaper than Nosler.

Funny, seems our top 3 are almost the same...
#3 would be Norma, only behind Lapua....and Lapua.. It is #3 because there have been reports of some softer batches in some calibers.

Any Nosler components are all on the same place on my list of things to get.....ohh wait a second, they aren't on there....

I payed 200 per box for Lapua 300WM brass, and it's ready to go right out of the box with no pissin around!

I have to note that I did pick up some new and once fired 6.5-284 Norma to try in my .284 Shehane along with Lapua brass just to see if there is a noticeable difference in the 2.

I've used Nosler in .22/250 .204, .300 Win Mag, .300 Weatherby, .300 Ultra (necked to .338 Edge), and 7 STW off the top of my head.
Results are mixed, 22/250 and .204 are great and case life is good. The 3 .300s are softer than I'd like. I start losing primer pockets about the time they start shooting well and acting like magnums. The brass is consistant as hell, but if I can only get a couple loads out of a case it's not going be part of my program.

If you try to prove the worth of premium brass at close range, you may end up wondering what all the fuss is about. Stretch that out to the next fenceline or next quarter section and you may find that some of those mystery flyers have disappeared.

nosler custom

Used it in my 338 edge a.i. the nosler brass is consistent but way to soft if you plan on pushing the psi . primer pockets will loosen after 3 loadings.
Hand sorted and prepped remington brass gave me great accuracy and last longer and way cheaper excluding your time to sort and prep.

Last gun show we had here, A box of Nosler Custom was the same price as a box of Lapua.......Nosler was 50pcs/Box....Lapua was 100pcs/box

Lapua brass would be a waste but paying for Nosler custom is ok? Maybe I'm missing something.

Yes you are, I agreed with the statement below, I doubt that you would see any realistic gains in accuracy with premiun brass of any kind in th OP's Winchester M70 Featherweight in .308.

You probably would not do worse with cheap Winchester brass.

I shot 50pcs of Nosler Custom in 260 Rem 0.5gr under recommended max (H4350) behind 120 SMK's. No obvious signs of pressure but when I went to reload, the primer pockets were so loose I could almost put them in by hand! This was an expensive lesson. No more Nosler Custom for me! Way too soft.
