Nosler Partition 30cal 220 gr in 308 Win Rifle. Not Too heavy

Ballistic tip over a partition hands down for a deer.
Partition is a poor choice for a deer but a good choice for a moose or bear.
IMO

I'll be sure to shout that into the deep freeze next time I'm at the old Man's house. The whitetails in there will no doubt be surprised and dismayed.

Ballistic tips are for coyotes. Partitions are for everything else. Except elephant.

Green Hills of Africa; Ernest Hemingway.

On the safari, that book came from, Hemingway shot several of the Big 5 with a .30-06, loaded with 220gr cup and core bullets ( that was in 1933). I am damn sure the 220gr Nolser Partition is superior to whatever those bullets were.

Having said that, I have never used the 220gr; I have used the 200gr Nosler Partition on moose, and the 200gr Nolser Accubond is my preferred bullet in my .300H&H... fwiw...

Let's share a laugh. I wrecked a few deer (SO, SO much bloodshot meat) with 140gr BT's from a 7mmRM before switching to 160gr Partitions in that cartridge. After the switch... instantly dropped deer with much, MUCH less wrecked meat. The BT is inferior to the Partition in every way except ballistics, IMO, and at 99% of hunting distances, it's not a worthwhile advantage.

Nosler's Partition is not a poor choice for any big game on our continent, from does on up.

Hey Warbird we all have our theories, I believe in heavy too, and more than anything believe in practice. It seems you subscribe to both, have fun and good hunting.

Expect the cold shoulder from the deep freeze occupants… sigh... mouthing my own rimshot.

Well, Gentlemen, what we have here is a 30-40 Krag with a superior bullet.

Warbird, there's not a whole lot wrong with that for hunting any big game in North Amercia....and many other continents, as well.

...nice rifle...good grouping...reasonable velocity...more suited to big game...keep up the good work!

best

My Ruger 77 International 308 shoots the 220 Sierra R.N. into very small groups, and surprisingly flat to 200 yards. Kills fine with minimal damage.

Nice to see guys willing to experiment.

I prefer a bit lighter bullets in my .308, but I've certainly got no complaint with someone else using heavies.

I've personally seen several moose go down quickly to old 215 grain RN out of a .303 British, so I wouldn't turn my nose to 220 grains out of a .308.

Obviously the OP's accuracy is outstanding; makes for a hard combination to criticize if you ask me.

Use small, light, soft and fast bullets on small, light, soft and fast animals.

Use bigger, heavier, harder and slower bullets on your bigger, heavier, harder and slower quarry.

No use making it harder than it has to be.

I like heavier bullets, kind of one shot one kill guy. Seeing a deer dying and crying ain't pretty. I had a box of Nosler Partition 30 220 gr in my reloading cabinet. Everyone told me I need at least 1:10 twist on my 308 rifle to stabilize the bullets.
Well, hunting season is coming, so I loaded 40 rounds with different powder weights. I shot them on 100 meters from Sauer 202 with 26" barel and 1:11 twist. Shooting 10 sets of 3 rounds through a MagnetoSpeed Chrony. To my surprise average group of the 10 sets was 0.56 MOA. Best group, 0.32 MOA came from a set loaded with 40.7 grains of IMR 4064 with Federal Match 210M primers at 2,328. Bullet depth 2.81".
Second best group, 0.38 MOA was from a set loaded with 38.7 grains of IMR 4064 at 2,235 f/s.
Will try at 300 yards tomorrow.

Thats terrific ... a soft point semi spitzer at moderate velocity and outstanding accuracy!! I think it will work well for any game. Agree with Wrong Way.

BTW .. would sure like to see how it does at 300 and if it remains stable in cold weather at 300yd..

I have a 1/10 twist 308W that I was hoping to try with a 220 one day - hadn't thought about the Nosler but see no reason why it wouldn't be great

Wow the deer I didn't have to chase seemed very dead when hit by BT.
I'm sure they were deer and not coyotes.
But hey Maybe I was wrong.
But hey listen I won't use BTs again because you know everything. !

Jack O'Connor shot a lot of whitetails with 270s and the 30-06. He wrote that he always got faster kills on deer with the lighter, faster bullets, but he recommended heavier bullets for the brush hunter.
