Kinda like trying to throw out an old garbage can... tough to get anywhere with that...
 
I called Costco and before I could even say that the lock is busted the manager said, "Bring it back". I explained why that wouldn't work and she said I need to call the manufacturer. The 1-800 number listed on Safety First's website is for over 1/2 dozen companies and I needed to push "6" to speak to a representative. That's ok I guess, except that "the extension doesn't exist". I tried the regular number. Again no luck as it was the same telephone tree. So then I tried again and pushed "0" and was able to speak to a real person who put me through to someone who "is not available at the moment". I left a message.

Now I wait.
 
Had what sounds exactly like the same issue I had with my stack on combo safe.
Stuck a bit the last time I closed it and when I tried to open it I had to force the handle. There was a small metal piece that popped out of place when I got forceful and although 2 of the 3 locking posts opened, the third would not retract.

If you bent it like me it's probably pooched. I had to drill and pry my way in.

Have you tried laying it on it's side/back/ just in case something is wedged/laying on something crucial? I will post a picture of my mess to show you what happened to mine if you dont have it sorted by then.
 
Talked to Safety First. They suggested I try wiggling the key etc etc.
If that fails call a locksmith and they will refund up to $100 for the service.

Still mulling the idea of leaving it as a time capsule and just buying new stuff. :)

Well I am heading out for the weekend, and I do need to take some firearms with me. So that leaves only a few possibilities.


  1. Don't go
  2. don't take firearms
  3. have locksmith open safe so I can take firearms, but then I have to take all of them as safe will be inoperable
  4. buy more firearms so I can take those with me, while the others are secure in the safe

We have to immediately rule the first two choices out. The third one is no good because they will take up too much space. That leaves only one viable option.

Does anyone in Prince George have a nice used Thureon Defence or JR Carbine for sale?
 
If you really want it open, call the GRC and tell them your house flooded. They will come over and have it open in a jiffy. Just make sure your front door is unlocked and wide open or you will need a new one of those too.....

I uploaded a pic of what the back of mine looked like. It felt like something was pressed up against it when I tried to open, I forced the handle to turn anyways (hindsight=20/20) and bent the mechanism behind the handle. In the pics you will see a "rod" I refer to that was bent out of place. That small piece was responsible for moving the entire mechanism that moved the locking pins into/out of place.

Is it possible a rifle shifted, and is leaning on the locking bar? I have had that happen due to overloaded safe/scoped rifles. Maybe a vigorous jiggle might help??

I explained the problem to the Safety First rep and he had a pretty good idea of the problem, but it was pretty hard to follow without a diagram. He said they would replace the whole thing.

GRC = RCMP
 
So I see you are in Prince George. Step 1 call trident. They cracked my uncles safe like nothing. Step 2 buy my safe I am selling :) it has a combo lock instead of a key.
