I'm going to get into IDPA and IPSC shortly (Black Badge course in November), and I want to buy a new pistol.

I presently shoot a HK .45 USP as my secondary for CQB, but this gun kicks a little too much to be truly fast.

I am settled on getting something in 9mm.

The guns I have looked at and shot include;

S&W MP9 - This gun has no recoil in my hands and it seems priced right.

Glock 17 G4 - I really like the Glocks and all the good things that go along with them, but I can't get over that muzzle-up problem I have; the cant of the grip is much greater than that of my HK (which I am going to keep and keep shooting for other disciplines), so when I bring it up, it is pointed way high. I also don't care for the trigger safety.

I wonder if I could get some advice (or at least humourous opinions) on the matter. I would be amenable to looking at other pistols besides those two that are similar.

Thanks.

CZ85 Combat.............you can play in both games and do well.

The two you mention are both striker fired and thus have squishy triggers. you can play with them and end up with a better..........squishy trigger. Not to mention the polymer frames do create more felt recoil (although you said it is not a problem).

Also the Shadow is good but you need to so some work to make it acceptable for IDPA.

I as well had the Glock 17 Gen4, did not like the grip angle. Although you said you don't like the trigger safeties I currently am using a Steyr M9A1 and love it. I did have extraction issues when i first got it but have installed the updated parts from Steyr and have not had a problem since. I just shot my first ever ODPL match with it and have to say i am gonna stick with this one. Try one if you can.

Have you tried an HK P30 -L-S in 9mm?
You can use it for IDPA and IPSC....and you can carry it SA cocked and locked,..or DA. (It has a thumb safety). Your transition for mag release would be nil...as you say you are used to the HK already. Your holsters may even be compatible...I know I am using a USP holster from bladetech for my P30-L...but only had to cut the lower section to make room for the added length of the P30-L.

Wow. Now I have three more pistols to research! It's a good thing that researching firearms is fun!

Thanks for the advice, guys.

One thing though; I heard that the XD was a bit of a pain if you had any warranty issues here in Canada. Any experience with that, Rosco?

I went from a G17 Gen4 to a M&P Pro Serie. I don't know about the regular M&P but the pro serie offer a better grip, better trigger, better mag. Overall I think it's a much better pistol.

Well, the G17 remains the easiest firearm of any type ever made to detail strip, and you can forget all about learning malfunction drills.

I hated mine at first, but I went from D to M (and even a richly un-deserved GM in Ontario) with mine, and I think I never had one malfunction.

My G17 with 50,000 rounds through it or so is my only restricted, now, and I'll never sell it.

This is my first CGN post in like 4 years, by the way.
