Well I got the Remington VTR in .308 in the mail a couple days ago yet my scope for it isn't going to be arriving until October and I so badly wanted to go shooting so I took the Tasco Varmint 6-24 off my Savage Mark II and threw them onto the VTR and went out to the local gravel pit.
It took me more shots that I would have liked to sight the bloody thing in since I dont own a laser bore sighter and no shooting table so I was forced to use the roof of the car, also without a "spotter" the first couple shots missed the target completely and I couldn't see where they hit the dirt through the scope so even bore sighting it was trial and error. Once I got it sighted in I was having a blast with it although I was only shooting to 150 yards since that is the length of the gravel pit (I might be able to stretch it to 200 yards by shooting from outside the pit from the hill into the pit).
I had purchased a box of cheap Winchester Super X, 150 grain Power-Points. I was only getting 1MOA at that distance but I figure once I get the bipod I ordered in and my rear shooting bag with a steady table (or ground from up the kill) that I can improve that. I do have a box of 168 grain Federal Premium Gold Medal ammunition although Im saving that for now.
The not good part? I went through the whole box of Winchester ammunition and Im in love! I found my new toy that is even more fun than the Savage! I currently dont reload (since Im short on money enough to buy a reloading kit) but I'm keeping my brass anyways for either when I do have enough or if a friend can reload them for me for now.
I'm very happy with the VTR although I know there are other firearms that are just as good. I paid $730 shipped for it new in box (removed from box but never fired). The barrel would be warm after 4 shots but by the time Id walk to the target and back it would be cooled off. On top of that the muzzle break really helps put the recoil down to that of a .223 and I can't comment on the noise since I was wearing ear plugs.
Sadly though I'll have to resight the damn thing in once my new scope arrives but that just means more fun.
