Not Good with the VTR

Well I got the Remington VTR in .308 in the mail a couple days ago yet my scope for it isn't going to be arriving until October and I so badly wanted to go shooting so I took the Tasco Varmint 6-24 off my Savage Mark II and threw them onto the VTR and went out to the local gravel pit.

It took me more shots that I would have liked to sight the bloody thing in since I dont own a laser bore sighter and no shooting table so I was forced to use the roof of the car, also without a "spotter" the first couple shots missed the target completely and I couldn't see where they hit the dirt through the scope so even bore sighting it was trial and error. Once I got it sighted in I was having a blast with it although I was only shooting to 150 yards since that is the length of the gravel pit (I might be able to stretch it to 200 yards by shooting from outside the pit from the hill into the pit).

I had purchased a box of cheap Winchester Super X, 150 grain Power-Points. I was only getting 1MOA at that distance but I figure once I get the bipod I ordered in and my rear shooting bag with a steady table (or ground from up the kill) that I can improve that. I do have a box of 168 grain Federal Premium Gold Medal ammunition although Im saving that for now.

The not good part? I went through the whole box of Winchester ammunition and Im in love! I found my new toy that is even more fun than the Savage! I currently dont reload (since Im short on money enough to buy a reloading kit) but I'm keeping my brass anyways for either when I do have enough or if a friend can reload them for me for now.

I'm very happy with the VTR although I know there are other firearms that are just as good. I paid $730 shipped for it new in box (removed from box but never fired). The barrel would be warm after 4 shots but by the time Id walk to the target and back it would be cooled off. On top of that the muzzle break really helps put the recoil down to that of a .223 and I can't comment on the noise since I was wearing ear plugs.

Sadly though I'll have to resight the damn thing in once my new scope arrives but that just means more fun. :D

Yep always keep your brass. I started reloading this year and have enough brass to keep me going for another year or so because I saved my brass.

Try a box of fed fusion 180 gr, I tried it on a whim in my 700P and got .4 @ 100 meters, half the price of so called 'match';)

Which scope are you getting in October?

Bushnell Banner, getting it as a present from my grandmother for fixing her driveway! :p

I was actually happy with the cheap Winchester ammunition, like I said, if I had a proper shooting bench and such I'd probably have better accuracy. Shooting using the car I could see my crosshairs moving. :(

Well that is a GREAT price on the rifle. That Federal ammo you have, if it is the gold medal match BTHP, all holes should be touching at 200 yards with that gun. I used that ammo in both of my 700 VTR's and in my Remington R-25. I also really like the Lapua 167 Gr. At 100, usually the same hole, unless I hecup, which happens from time to time.

When you get the new scope, get a cardboard box and cut a u shaped hole in the front and back of the box to hold the rifle steady.
Take the bolt out of the rifle and look down the barrel and aim the barrel by moving the rifle in the box so your target bullseye is centered in the rifling of the barrel.
Lift your head without moving the rifle and see where your scopes crosshairs are aimed.
Adjust crosshairs to aim at center of bullseye then look through barrel again to make sure its also centered on target.
Then try a shot.

Yup it's the BTHP.

I feel dumb... I took the rifle out today since it's supposed to be the only decent weather I'll have in the next week. I fired a couple rounds but the gun seemed to be MORE out of sight than it was a couple days ago (by about 2-3 inches). So I resighted it in and managed to hit the damn duck FINALLY three out of 4 shots (I'll post pics later). It wasn't until I got home that I was looking everything over and noticed that the forward scope ring was very slightly loose, thus my slight accuracy problem.

Granted these are not the rings nor the scope that are staying on the rifle so I never used lock tight but I should have made sure everything was tightened before shooting. A mistake I'll never make again.

BTW did I mention that I just LOVE this rifle? :D

Pic's will follow on another thread when I come back from my hunting trip on what I did to this rifle. Cuz I know how much people love ####!

Ok well here's is my current VTR that I'll eventually be swapping the stock out to something a little more sturdy later on in life.

Excuse the "commando" type pictures I was playing around with my old airsoft gear for a "photo op" to do with my upcoming halloween costume as a "zombie hunter".

It still has the Tasco Varmint scope on it due to the Bushnell having warranty work being done. So far though that Tasco is a dead ringer on top of it.

Currently shooting Golf balls at 200 yards because that's as far as the gravel pit goes (and to get that far requires me to shoot from the hill above one side of the pit down into the far side).

I've gotta say, that is one of Remmy's sharpest looking rifles. The barrel does it for me. :D

Considering how many "elites" of the shooting world consider your setup to be "unworthy", I'd say you're doing pretty damn good.

Thanks! Im at the baseline so I can only buy better equipment from here! :D

I am flip flopping between a few rifles, leaning towards the VTR (mostly just questioning if I can get more for my money), but every time I set my eyes on the VTR, my heart skips a beat, and thanks to your post I want one even more now :D

that's one ###y gun

If you're planning very long range shooting there ARE better rifles for the same or less money than the VTR. If you were going for say 500 yards then I might start with a 700P.

But if you can get the VTR for as cheap as I did mine then it's worth it in my opinion. I hate to say it but it was the cost that swung me over to this. I picked her up NIB for a REALLY good price considering that brand new in local shops they want $1000 plus taxes for this gun.

Now Im not saying the VTR can be accurate (although some people have complained about getting lemons) but for the price one usually pays brand new there are more accurate rifles at long distances. I plan on changing the stock out at some point in the future and getting it bedded in the new stock as well. A long project.

Just wondering. Where did you get ur VTR? I am looking into a Reminton 700 VTR recently as well, but the price u r getting seems to be at least $100+ cheaper than any online store I know. You probabily get ur VTR from EE board? For the EE board, most of the time, I saw people tried to sell their used guns for a price more than retail. It really frustrates me.

I got my VTR for $700 NIB here on the EE so Im happy with that deal. My local gun store has them for $1000+tax but Ellwood Epps has them for just under $900 plus tax and shipping of course (The Desert Camo VTR is over $900).

The regular VTR though is the same price no matter the caliber, .22-250, .223, .243, .308, .17 Fireaball, etc.

Now you can get a Muzzlebreak version and I've heard of also a non-muzzle break version.
