Modifying ammo

There are tools available for reforming the nose and diameter of the .22 rimfire cartridges. Also, hollow pointing tools are available for drilling out the cavity a bit. The "Paco Kelly" tool comes with three different types of nose dies, and you can order it in .223 or .224 diameter to fit your barrel.

Paco's tool needs impact to reform the nose of the bullet. I like the looks of the machined hollow point better.

i would be leary of impact. the 3 jaw chuck gives 3 contact
points to fire if you impact a little hard, all it would take is
a balloon rim which u find the odd one and boom. the brass shrapnell could hurt,
 
i tried penning some hollow points the other day. i also tried putting some slits in some. i dont know how they perform or if they even fly straight because i havn't been to the range yet, but i think i have some pics
these are the cut ones i did. used a flat sharp hobby knife to just push down on them:

and this one i pushed a pen all the way in, then rotated it around at an angle to dish it out abit. i'm hoping that a dish will make it want to expand outwards abit. cut some slits into a dished one, but you don't need pics of that really:

There's a new version out now....no major dif, though.

No primer-shock yet, from using the Paco tool...
 
I would like something similar to Paco's but one that you have to turn the two parts together to a preseated depth. Kind of like when you are setting up your dies for reloading. Good vid Ronin.

Just make sure that the 2 "parts" don't form a sealed tube. If the cartridge were to go off, you would be holding a pipe bomb. :eek:
 
They seem to flatten right out when hitting something.
tested on a book they don't penetrate as deep,but they open up faster
 
i messed around with this befor, just for fun i flattend a .22 lr so that the lead was just barley ahead of the case and well.. it hit the phone book at 20 yards and just bounced off LOL :p, also cutting a "*" seems to make it fragment pretty good.

Opening faster is what id be looking for. Our last gopher weekend we used primarily American Eagles, and they tend to leave the little fellas loppin' and crawlin'

Some of my modded .22's (Paco Nastinose, for those who'd care) seem to have managed to penetrate deeper b/c they expand, IMHO. In other words (not doing a GWB here...;)), the "displaced target material" seems to work with the modded .22 to make a bigger exit-area impact.

Put another way (GWB would be so proud): the expanded .22 gathers/presses more "target-material" against the would-be exit area.

Sorry if that sounds totally incoherent. I'm thinking something along the lines of HESH-heads here, but I may be totally out to lunch. Esp. seeing as how there is penetration.

I tried Ronin's pen trick ;) on some Power Points and it didn't make too much of a difference, but it did make a big difference on some AE22. It seemed pretty easy to get consistent results also.

Edit...here's a pic of a couple of Power Points (top two with the unmodded on the left) and two AE22 (bottom two, unmodded on the left). I wouldn't bother trying to mod the Power Points, but I assume the AE22 would work better on critters now.

It's elegantly simple - and yes, I do feel a 'lil stupid for buying the Paco tool, but:

1) It's a pleasure to be schooled by someone like Ronin. :cool:

2) Paco's tool is another toy, and boys like their toys...:D

So, in short...I think I'll buy the Paco tool for shorts. :confused:
 
When I was a kid, living on a turkey farm, we trained our Weimaraners to tree the many unwelcome feral cats that people were always dumping on our property. (Cats are extremely hazardous to an intensive poultry operation, for many reasons). There was often a danger of putting a .22 bullet both through the cat and through the roof of the barn. We solved that problem by creating very large hollow points with the tip of a pen and then cutting a shallow x in the tip. Accuracy was never tested, but at 20 feet they were very deadly and did not exit the cat. Today I'd probably use CCI Stingers with a bigger hollow point for that job.
