Not just another "what black rifle to buy" thread. Totally different.

I guess I should have specified as it would make a huge difference in what is recommended. I shoot some IDPA, 3gun and will be shooting a bit of IPSC at my club next year. I have other guns to shoot longer distances or hut with if I wanted to. This one is just for fun and competition. The AR is pretty hard to pass up given its adaptability and low weight. But like I said, I have to be different. Its just something thats important to me.

There are ACR's that sell for under $3000 used. So thats not a problem. Same goes for an SL-8... they do come up under $3000. Im looking for a gun that is, first and foremost, reliable. But 2nd... it needs to be easy to maintain and clean as, with 2 young kids I dont have alot of time to be cleaning and fixing guns. My XCR is, definitely, the most unique gun at the matches right now. In a sea of AR's it does stand out. But its not been %100 reliable. I guess what I should do is install the .223 kit and try it out that way. Maybe it will run differently than it does in 7.62. Its not that its bad, it just hickups at the worst possible time. That bugs me.

I wish I could hold a bull pup. Im going to stop in at epps this week and see what they have laying around. Maybe if I hold one (of any model) ill know better if I can adapt to it and like it or not.

Well after reading this thread title "This is not just another what black rifle help me choose thread," I have come to the conclusion that this is in fact another "what black rifle should I choose thread." It is not totally different as posted by the OP.:p

Just by a tavor already.

It shouldn't be that hard of a decision, buy whatever used as you will get bored with it in a while anyhow sell it and buy the next. Complete the cycle over and over until you find what you like best.

I played around at the counter with a TAR21. Very compact, but restricted.

My XCR was 100% reliable, as are most peoples. What's yours doing? I had the .223 one though. The HK Sl-8 you can get well below 3000$, probably around 1800-2000$. The ACR is so similar to the XCR I don't think it would be worth selling your XCR and take a loss to buy an ACR for 3000$ then put another 500$+ for the barrel etc. The Sl-8 like I said earlier, I have heard people having lots of problems with and they aren't that accurate either(I have no experience first hand though). The Tavor is the only one I would justify selling your XCR for out of that list.

Interesting. Ill cross the SL-8 off my list. Sounds like its not a great choice.
I was also just hunting around and came across the Benelli MR-1... upgrades arent a huge deal to me if the gun is good enough out of the box. MR-1 seems like it fits the bill and isnt going to break the bank. Thoughts.

Buy one and don't look back. It eats Norc like its going out of style and rings a 18" gong at 400yards no problem. With it being front heavy it has next to no muzzle climb. And if it's too heavy. Buff up son.

Did some reading about the MR-1. Not what im looking for. Did more looking at the ACR. I think i found one that fits my budget and taste so im going to see if I can make it happen.

If nothing else, they dont appear to loose much value so thats a good thing.

I have a tavor NR, xcr-m, and m1a. I'd never give up any but if I was solely going for range fun it's tavor all the way. Plus such good deals on quality 223.

I've heard of people having problems with the SL8 but don't have any experience with them myself, and they aren't any more accurate then the XCR.
Interesting info, I have had an SL8 for years and never had a single problem, it is also more accurate than the XCR. I'm not sure why I even bought an xcr in hindsight.......

Acr or Tavor. Acr is def fron heavy but not overly so with a red dot mounted. I have used it for a few 3 gun matches no problem and doesn't skip a beat. Great ergos and amazing trigger when you swap in a geissele. If you find it heavy hit the gym more. Tavor is awesome right out of the box. Couldn't go wrong with one.

I say keep your guns separated, have your XCR or whatever NR rifle you ending with as your rifle for those armed hikes in the woods, than get yourself light AR rig for matches , why drag all that weigh around when you don't have to.

There is a reason the AR can't be beat. If you want to be different get a .308 AR!

Of the items on your list I'd have to say the tavor. I've never been around the ACR, but handling the XCR was enough to turn me off of it. The pictures i've seen of the XCR broken down doesn't leave me with much confidence either.

Tavor felt great in my hands but I already have an AR and I don't like .223. I spent my .308 AR budget on a BD44, so I have to wait a while until I can make my wife want to kill me.

WTF...how does the Swiss rifle feel plastic?!

I hate the plastic hand guards, I really like the feel of a nice metal rail. I think with the plastic on there it makes the gun look ugly, but that's my opinion. I think it would look a lot nicer with a nice machined rail or even a metal hand guard.

And the Tavor being ALL plastic? 90% of AR hand guards are plastic...and as are most other rifles. Metal may LOOK nice but its not always worth the weight nor is it as strong depending on use.
