I recently got a Yugo SKS that was completely in issued, all that happened to it was it was taken out of the plastic bag and boxed up and send to me.
I stripped it down and boy did I have a time 13 pairs of gloves, I couldn't figure out what to use that wouldn't ruin the stock, that wouldn't ruin the bluing.
I had a can of WD-40 spray not the aerosol but the trigger one, honestly it took all the cosmoline off and a few paper towels later I'm done but I also have to do the receiver barrel and bayonet now, also have some of the bigger metal parts lol.
I think I'm going to put the stock in a bag wrapped in paper towels and just crank the heat to get the last of the cosmo
Any advice on that??

I was thinking about that the only thing I want to do is put some matte poly over it because the upper handguard is a little bit dry looking it needs something covering it I'm rubbed in a little bit of blo I had
 
Varsol soak all the metal parts and wipe the stock as clean as you can with rags and then give it a wipe with a varsol soaked rag, boiling water will also remove cosmoline from the receiver and bore. Use a funnel to pour it from the breech, put the muzzle end in a pail to catch the water etc.
 
I always used gasoline to strip off cosmoline. Works well. The stock , I place is the oven at about 175 F and sweated out the cosmoline. Just kept wiping it down . Makes the house smell a bit but works well.
 
I used some WD-40 then wiped with varsol, the metal parts I used varsol and alot of rags, I have some in places but it will come out with a warm up, no where that is will hang up, the firing pin, bore and gas system is clean, light oil all over
 
I've been using wd-40 on cosmo for years. It's a good degreaser that's gentle on original finishes. I use glass cleaner to remove the oily residue and smell.
 
I was thinking that I would crank up the sauna to 140 deg F Put the rifle wrapped in paper towel in a paper lawn bag. Leave in the sauna foe a couple of hours and wipe it off. Has anybody ever tried this?? Just curious.
 
I wrap it and put it behind the wood stove, a couple of week later all cosmoline is trap in the wrapping.
 
Pretty much the only thing I use wd 40 for is degreasing. Works great on cosmoline and old bearing grease. The low oven and LOTS of paper towel or newspaper works great too, especially for sweating it out of the wood.

Be mindful of the fire risk, never leave it unattended and always have your fire extinguisher on hand, like next to the oven door.

I'd be in the sauna with it, in case it starts to stink up the place.
