You are correct. I believe the ratios of m96 to m38 produced was about 5:1
I owned a m96 mfg. 1917, one of the most accurate and well built rifles I've seen.
Oops, old thread.
I started my collection about 5 years ago and have been buying 2-4 guns every year since. I'm at the point now where I don't know which direction to go next and was hoping for some recommendations. I'll be sticking with NR purchases and won't be considering any bullpups (lefty).
I currently own:
1. Semi auto .22 x 3
2. Semi auto .223 x 2
3. Semi Auto 7.62 x 39 x 1
4. Semi Auto 9mm x 1
5. Semi Auto 30-06 x 1
6. Semi-auto 12 gauge x1 (gone fishing)
7. Pump 12 gauge x 2
8. Bolt action .223 x 1
9. Lever Action 45-70 x 1
So if you owned these rifles what would you be going with next? The few options I've been considering:
1. Compact .308 Bolt action, with detachable mag and short barrel <20inch...still looking for available options.
2. New semi auto shotgun, 1301? 940? other?
3. Milsurp, aside from an SKS my collection is lacking in this category. A Swedish Mauser M38 is top of my list, maybe a Lee Enfield? not looking to spend big money on a Milsurp.
4. A long range/precision platform in .308/6.5 to dive into long range shooting.
5. A higher end black rifle like a Famae, NDS, ACR, B&T etc.
6. A new .22 plinker (bolt/lever).
What would you recommend?
There were many of the M96s converted to M38s as well. My M96 was built in Obendorf in 1900, it has a way better trigger than any of the M38s I have shot, including my own. There are still some out there; here is the one I picked up yesterday beside my M96:

Sierra's reloading data show some almost unbelievable muzzle velocities out of their M96 test rifle; 3500 FPS with 85 gr, 3000 with the 120 gr, and 2400-2500 with 160 gr (depending on the powder used). I would guess about 150-200 FPS less out of the shorter M38 barrel.
What do you plan on doing? Lots of great BPCR single shots that are great fun. Anschutz 22 for small target groups. Assorted shotguns for skeet , trap, or sporting. List your interest and we will gladly spend your money. You could just send me your money and I’ll let you know what you bought. Good luck
No SxS shotgun?
