Not technically a milsurp, but one for the Ross fans!

I don't mean to drag a bunch of sporting rifle stuff into the milsurp section, I just figured more folks in this section would appreciate this particular rifle.

I think it's been about 3 years since I first acquired this 1905-R, but I think I'm finally done with it. Lots of finicky and annoying little parts to remake or modify, as I'm not even sure how much of the rifle was original in the first place.

The rifle has a new Jury barrel and a new black walnut stock that's been coated with linseed oil. All the metal has been hot blued, but I didn't go crazy on polishing all of the original pieces, so they are a bit dull in comparison to the barrel.

The stock also ended up with a few knots near the butt end. Nothing that bothers me, but I hope they don't become the cause of any cracks. They do add a little extra character I suppose.

I have to make a small extension piece to reach from the barrel band to this sling mount. The washer is helping to cover the hole in the stock, as the threads in the barrel band are angled slightly, the hole in the stock was not exactly a "first try" type of alignment.

Learning experience for myself and the stock maker. I think the notch for the Harris lever was cut out a bit too large. It could have had an extra 1/2" of wood left to keep the gap closed up. I'm not complaining, just observing so that the next stock I have made won't have the same gap.

I'm currently working on the next sporter, as I seem to have enough parts for another, similar rifle. Going to try to go a little fancier on the stock end of it, hopefully some zebra stripes in the wood grain.

I suppose now I need to take this one out and try it out, make sure all the work wasn't just so it could sit in the safe and look pretty.

Nice work! A lighter blue maybe suits these old rifles better and if you could get someone to redo the case colours on the bolt sleeve and the bright flame blue on the extractor she'd be a real looker, but maybe the next one?
How does it shoot?

Very nice indeed! I've had a few 1905-R's and very nice to see one with a new black walnut stock!

Did you say that was a new barrel?

Someone made a barrel that timed up and headspaced, with the LH buttress thread?

If so, my hat is off to whoever did that very difficult job.

Nice work!

Awesome job! I had a Ross 1905 R years ago, but nowhere near as nice as your example. I ended up selling it as a parts gun, as the bolt was a mishmash of incorrect parts and I couldn't even cycle it to shoot the rifle. I was just wondering how the recoil is on such a small and delicate rifle?

Yikes, I forgot about this post and apparently don't browse the Milsurp section enough.

For those curious, I did the barrel threading. Barrel was made by Bob Jury.

Unfortunate that he doesn't do carbon steel anymore, as he was willing to make the barrels and profile them for me.

Is that the one I found for you at auction?

Looks great.

Not this one, this is one I had sitting around for a while. I think the one you got my is actually the next in line though, as I have another barrel threaded and chambered for the next project.

Who was the stock maker?? I have a M10 Ross sporter and would like a newer stock.

Alberta Gun Stocks out of New Norway, AB. Bill is quite busy these days, with a full time job and trying to keep up to stock orders, but he's been doing a great job for me so far and he's great to deal with.

I don't find the recoil to be that bad, but I'm not exactly a small person. I thought that my 1903 Springfield was actually a little harder on my shoulder than this thing.

This one was hot blued, so I'm not sure I can get a lighter blue. I believe the correct method would be rust bluing, but I'm not ready to tackle that just yet.....or maybe just not patient enough for it. I do have another 1905 in the works, so perhaps it can be the rust bluing experiment.

Haven't shot it yet with the new stock. I actually only took it out shooting once with the new barrel, just to make sure it wasn't making a shotgun pattern before I got too far into the project. I had about a 2" group at 40 yards with the iron sights. Hopefully it's better with the new stock, and maybe more practice with iron sights, and I hope the barrel band doesn't affect accuracy. It was a bit of a tight fit initially.
