I don't mean to drag a bunch of sporting rifle stuff into the milsurp section, I just figured more folks in this section would appreciate this particular rifle.
I think it's been about 3 years since I first acquired this 1905-R, but I think I'm finally done with it. Lots of finicky and annoying little parts to remake or modify, as I'm not even sure how much of the rifle was original in the first place.
The rifle has a new Jury barrel and a new black walnut stock that's been coated with linseed oil. All the metal has been hot blued, but I didn't go crazy on polishing all of the original pieces, so they are a bit dull in comparison to the barrel.
The stock also ended up with a few knots near the butt end. Nothing that bothers me, but I hope they don't become the cause of any cracks. They do add a little extra character I suppose.
I have to make a small extension piece to reach from the barrel band to this sling mount. The washer is helping to cover the hole in the stock, as the threads in the barrel band are angled slightly, the hole in the stock was not exactly a "first try" type of alignment.
Learning experience for myself and the stock maker. I think the notch for the Harris lever was cut out a bit too large. It could have had an extra 1/2" of wood left to keep the gap closed up. I'm not complaining, just observing so that the next stock I have made won't have the same gap.
I'm currently working on the next sporter, as I seem to have enough parts for another, similar rifle. Going to try to go a little fancier on the stock end of it, hopefully some zebra stripes in the wood grain.
I suppose now I need to take this one out and try it out, make sure all the work wasn't just so it could sit in the safe and look pretty.
