Due to personnel changes at the CFO office, and thus new "policies", the BC CFO is no longer issuing or renewing ATCs for 10mm firearms.

I know several of you have them on your ATCs and would like to know. Please PM me if you have had similar issues, especially if you were able to talk some sense into the CFO office.

Thanks

I'm dealing with them right now and just had my phone call interview with a Firearms Officer.

He didn't mention anything about this but told me that they were cracking down on how many firearms are allowed on your permit.

They are trying to reclassify as many prospectors as they can as only being recreational prospectors which doesn't qualify you for an ATC any longer.

A key factor that they are looking for is if you have a Work Safe BC account #.

If you are not covered under WSBC you are not fully employed and thus a recreational prospector only.

I sent in the request to have it added to my existing ATC, and they called back to deny the request citing semi-automatic firearms as too unreliable for ATC and 10mm as an inadequate calibre for bears.

Let me know if any of you have been successful in getting any 10mm or even automatics renewed, or added since the change in CFO (happened in June I believe).

I've been doing contract geophysical survey work for months now, so there should be no concern over whether I'm "recreational".

Very vert interesting

Since I hold a ATC in Alberta this is interesting to me. How do they support their claims of unreliability due to the action type and caliber. Why do we have all these LEO officers with semi auto's then if they are soo unreliable? And just because you do not have a WCB account means squat really.

Very interesting.

Hmmm Time to get my 110 lb wife with tiny hands on this one. Is she better off with a gun she can shoot well and carry easily or with "enough" gun? We'll have to see?

THe WCB# does make alot sense so no argument there. You can get one easy as anything so no road block on that one.

I was just thinking about all of our Conservation officers that carry 40 S&W chambered semi-auto handguns...

I have spoken to several over the years that have used their 40 S&W's to shoot problem black bears.

Ryan did you state to the CFO that denied your request that the 10mm when loaded properly is almost the equivalent to the 41 mag and in the case of a Glock 20 or 29 has 10 shots in the mag and one in the tube, is far lighter and easier to carry than a revolver?

I tried to talk sense with the guy who called me. I said I knew the 10mm was not as effective as the other calibre on my atc, I said it would be used where grizzlies are not common and in the winter time, I said it was lighter and easier for me to carry when in heavy brush and steep terrain. I said automatics are very reliable, as long as they're properly maintained. He stated they had done research on using automatics and 10mm for carrying, I asked what research they had done.

To every one of these questions his reply was, "We have decided only to issue ATC for cover-all calibres in revolvers. This is the decision we have made, you have no choice in the matter, this call is just to advise you of our decision".

I just talked to the FO again and it is not the 10mm round that he is concerned about it is that they are not allowing semi-auto handguns anymore because they are not reliable. Which really is a total load of ...

I asked who made this decision and he told me the recommendation came from the CO's and DFO's...

I stated that enforcement officers including CO's & DFO's carry semi-auto's so why are we no longer allowed?

He stated that people that work in the bush work in extremely dirty enviroments where semi-auto's would tend to jam so they are only allowing revolvers.

I guess this is ok but I definately like the advantage of popping a mag quickly in for when I am jumping in and out of my truck checking out new areas.

For those you that do not understand the jumping in and out of the truck scenario. I'll tell you a little story about the biggest gem stone find ever made in Canada. It was 2 young kids hanging out with their prospector dad playing in the ditch on the side of a new logging road that found the gems.

Also the richest find I ever made was on the side of an old logging road that had just had the cliff on the corner of the road blasted out to make a longer turning radius for the logging trucks...

Also remember forest fires are a prospectors best friend for opening up areas to search...

40 S&w

Exactly campcook. I have a 40 on my ATC as well as my 44mag. The 40 seems to do well for the LEO's but not us now? Plus I would like to see the research. I have been debating over whether to buy a 10mm to replace my 40 and I have found absolutely no research stating that a 10mm semi auto is unreliable in this venue.

When it comes down to prospecting full time vs. recreational; the recreational prospector is far less likely to require the use of a handgun for protection when completing the same task, only not 12 months a year but only 6 months?

What qualifies it as recreational anyways? Just a WCB#? So a guy decides he is going to take a year away from his steady work and try prospecting while taking a financial loss and that is recreational? Makes sense now. Or you have and WCB# and you haven't made you payments up to date, and they choose to revoke your ATC because of financial problems making you a criminal? How should those really be tied together?

There's no point in trying to make sense of the countless arbitrary and ridiculous decisions surrounding gun control in this country. The question is, what can we do about it? (In this came especially)

I read somewhere that only 900 individuals have ATCs in Kanada...

Sounds like a conspiracy...

For some reason in todays political climate the term 'semi-auto' has become synonomous with EVIL?

Hence, LIEberal proposed semi-auto ban?

Sounds like alot of these CFO's are LIEberals or got their jobs from LIEberals and are now "setting the stage" for the banning of semi-auto handguns/and/or firearms?

If semi-auto handguns are not legal to carry with ATC=No need for anyone to own one?

Except police and military??

This country is truly fooked...

I'm not sure of these processes, but, looking at many of the other "challenges" on this forum, I dont' think they can refuse to give you a refusal in writing.:)

I have a meeting with my MP very soon I guarantee I will be talking to him about this, as well as I am going to forward this info to my connection to Minister Day and have him ask him about why this is happening.

I would like to know if Day even knows about it?

It's tough typing with a 5 month old trying to hit all of the keys on the keyboard at the same time or grab everything on my desk and I'm only typing one handed... :)

From the sounds of this I need to put an auto on my ATC before that logic spills over to Manitoba. How do they explain that every cop in the country has dropped the revolver in preference to the auto if the autos are unreliable? I would suggest that a jam in an auto is faster to clear than a jam in a revolver caused by a bullet jumping it's crimp. I think this guy is one of the "if it's concealable - it's bad crowd", despite the fact that ATC guns are not carried concealed.

What ever the logic, the bottom line is that you have a guy in charge who wants to eventually limit your choices to guns that fall within his concept of suitable wilderness carry handguns, undoubtedly large double action .44 magnum revolvers with minimum 6" barrels. I hope you are successful in helping him see the light.
