Nova Scotia Bearhunting question

From Sept 10 to the last Friday in October (deer opener) bear can only be hunted over a registered bait site. For the duration of deer season they can be taken whereverit's legal to hunt without a registered site.

Oh man... New Brunswick and Nova Scotia never cease to amaze me with their idiotic game laws.

I assume this is another restriction that centers around derr jacking issues? Much like the caliber restrictions etc...

C68, I guess they want a handle on where people with guns will be located this early in the fall, and by registering bait sites DNR has a good idea of where you should be. I think last year was the first time bear season and deer season were open at the same time, generally bear season closed on the evening before deer season opened. The population is high and there were/are lots of nuisance calls, so DNR opened the season throughout the fall to try to get hunter #'s up.
I've also heard lots of rumors about people shooting bears just beacause they had been eating apples put out for deer, and not doing anyhting with the bear, often as not it took off and was never tracked. That might be part of the reason for the extended season, plus more hunters are buying tags at $26 bucks and change, just in case a blackie stumbles across their path.

Maybe a Spring season is on order. I have left a few bucks in NB over the last 3 years on spring hunts, I would love to donate to NS as well.

The hunting regs in NS and NB remind me of our stupid gun laws. Useless laws forced down the throats of law abiding folks in order to (ineffectively) try to prevent a few bad apples. Let's face it, the DNR doesn't want tyou walking around with your rifle as you may be tempted to shoot a deer out of season... they already have laws against that!

Yes I grew up in NS and the laws were forever draconian here....
Still are, the biggest positive change was everything related to coyote hunting, and the most recent doe seasons.

Not too many moons ago, there was no such a thing as doe tags in NS.

The first year I was old enough to hunt big game was the first year the buck law came in, went three years without seeing an antler, then first deer and I've gotten a couple of doe tags over the years. The population is up because of our easy winters, they allowed two deer per tag in one zone last year. A spring season for bear would be awesome, more time in the bush, and it would bring more out of province hunters in to spend money and keep NS hunters here instead of going to NB. The thing a lot of people are talking about here now is sunday hunting, are we the only province that doesn't allow this?

NB and PEI do not allow Sunday hunting ... YET. I think there is one prairie province that doesn't as well.

I'm in Colchester Co., we fall into Zone 4. There are lots of deer b/c of the easy winters we've had,it would be a good year to have a doe tag. Bear pop. is up quite high too. When I registered my sites, the guy at DNR said that there were a lot of nuisance calls this year. Haven't seen many grouse or rabbits so far.
We don't get a large number of monster bucks, spikes, forks and sixes are normal with a few 8 pts and better. Body size is good. I'm not sure about bears, this will only be my second year hunting them, and while quite a few were taken last season, I didn't hear much about weights. I got one last year that was about 125, a friend got one that was 220, and on the NS hunting site there was one taken that was 360- something.
