Hey everyone!

Just got my first .22 and was wondering if anyone knows any good areas or places in the bush to go and shoot around Halifax Nova Scotia?

Thanks!

The Firearms Act's Storage, Display, Transportation and Handling of Firearms by Individuals Regulations (SOR/98-209) stipulates that An individual may load a firearm or handle a loaded firearm only in a place where the firearm may be discharged in accordance with all applicable Acts of Parliament and of the legislature of a province, regulations made under such Acts, and municipal by-laws.

Conservation officers in this province (N.S.) are of the opinion that hunting is the only acceptable reason for having a firearm in wildlife habitat. If you are found in wildlife habitat without proper documentation for hunting, or with a firearm that is not legal for hunting, you should expect to be detained, hassled, and charged.

My advice to you is to restrict your shooting to approved shooting ranges until you have had a chance to complete your hunter safety course. When you do your hunter safety course you will have an opportunity to learn the wildlife laws and regulations of this highly-regulated province. With a N.S. Wildlife Resources Card in hand, you will be free to buy a N.S. Wildlife Habitat Stamp. A valid N.S. Wildlife Habitat Stamp will enable you to hunt snowshoe hare and some other non-protected wildlife with your .22 (albeit, in accordance with the many regulations). The rest of the time (when your .22 cannot be carried), you can still hunt non-protected wildlife with a shotgun loaded with shot.

It's the law.

Wow. I used to shoot in Ontario in the bush with friends. I can't believe it's harder here than in Ontario of all places

So I booked a time at one of the public ranges. The only instructions they gave me was "Bring your own targets".

Has anyone been to a public range? Is there generally someone there or does someone from the DNR show up to see you?

Thanks!

Welcome to the sport. Your best bet is to use an approved range. Here's a link to my Google map of ranges/clubs in the Atlantic Provinces. Your best bet is to join a club - AMA and NSRA are the closest. Alternately you could use one of the DNR ranges - Chester Grant, West Jeddore (screwed up now due to the arc of fire protecting 'closet' you have to shoot from), Georgefield and Stanley are the closest.

I usually bring something to hang the targets on as well. Many times the frames at the range are non existant or unuseable. The DNR ranges I've been using aren't well maintained. In all the years I've been shooting I've never seen a DNR rep at a range.

Generally they are a free for all.People show up without booking and pretty much do what they want.Safety can be an issue sometimes.Don't be shy about making sure anybody else there isn't handling guns on the firing line while your down range. Some guys have little to no respect for safety.Better to piss somebody off than end up dead.

Thanks for all the advice. Not having anyone that's into shooting sports close to me makes it a bit hard sometimes walking into new situations and places. But you guys make it a lot easier!

As you all pointed out there was no-one there! The rain/snow probably helped with that. But I drove all the way there so I wasn't not going to shoot for any weather!

The range looked great except for the giant block wall they have set up infront of the shooting bench. A bit of a pain but I can't complain for free.

I can see the advantages of joining a club though. Not much of a community out there all by myself!

Again thanks for all the advice

Glad you had a good time. The DNR range in Leitches Creek here in CB is the only one even close to Industrial Cape Breton anymore that I know of.It's pretty trashed most of the time but it's all we've got so I make the best of it.Would be nice to have something a little closer though.

There is a gun club (AVSSC) just outside of Kentville. I know its about an hour away but there are a lot of knowledgeable individuals that are members there.

Hey Isaac. I went to the Sibley road one like you. It was super clean but kind of hard to shoot because of the awesome block. It was also just over an hour outside of where I live which was a bit of a pain.

I'm going to look into a bunch of ranges (and now the AVSSC one too). Some company shooting would definitely help the experience a bit.
