Hello,
I may be making a work-related move to the Halifax area and am wondering what the deer hunting prospects are there. I now live in NB and our deer herd is not huge, but is on the upswing due to mild winters. Our bucks can be in the 140 class and occasionally considerably larger, with a mature buck dressing over 200 lbs. What sort of shape is the NS deer herd in and how do they compare body and antler-wise, with NB bucks? Also, what is land access like? Am I going to have to buy or lease a hunting spot, or is there good public and/or freehold land which can be accessed? Here in NB we have a good supply of Crown and freehold forest land which has generally has public access, as well as decent access to private land. Private land access often depends on who you know, and initially I won't know anyone;) Finally, What sort of hunting pressure is there in NS? In NB, particularly in the areas of the Province where deer numbers are strong, there is heavy hunting pressure.

Thanks so much for your feedback:)

i have some family down the south shore area you might wanna take a look at the annapolis valley areas and into digby & yarmouth countys the local ministry should bbe able to give you a map which shows whats crown land and whats not

There are pockets , in farm country that have decent numbers, but the numbers are way down in most areas. I would suggest that hardwood belt that runs near center of the province for the length of it. Check the regs and you will see where doe tags are offered up.
It sure ain't the praries that for sure. And the woods deer are loosing prime land all the time. Oak stands are cut all the time, deer are always on the move from one area to the next in order to survive. Not a pretty picture:(
