I am seeing a lot more of these style of sights hit the market, most notably with their introduction in guns such as the H&K P30L and 45 as well as a night sight option from Trijicon on their Glock series:

My question is this: What is the big deal with these Novak sights? How do they differ from standard sights? Are they that much better than standard sights?

Wish i had more to post, but i really dont.

(Sorry if this isn't the right forum for this topic)

Their sloped shape makes them less "snaggy" than other sights of the same height. The recessed section where the notch is tends to shade the sights a bit cutting back on glare on the sight. I like them.

thanks for the input!

but other than the snag and glare "issue", they are not necessarily better or superior to standard lights are they?

Im asking because i plan on buying some trijicon nights sights, and i dont want to make the purchase until i figure this out.

The only tidbit I can add that hasn't been said here is the fact that most experienced shooters I have seen praise them. This is usually a good sign. :D

but does the extra added length actually do anything beneficial, or is it too miniscule to actually have an effect?

judging by those pics above, looks like maybe 5% longer? on a shorty like a commander it might be more, but on a beretta or gov't probably not as much.

I find Novaks give you more light around the front sight - which makes them easier to pick up quickly. The draw back is they require you to think out your one handed stoppage drils a bit more thoroughly, since you can't just snag the back sight to work the slide. This is why you sometimes see skateboard tape on the top of a slide. This isn't an issue on a 1911 without an FLGR, but is on almost every other pistol.

I forgot this--on my M&P40 the design of the Novak sights gives a sight radius equal to a Glock 17's with a barrel that's about a quarter of an inch shorter. Not a huge difference but it's a difference in the right direction.
