Hello...

I am just wondering what you guys would think a great "First Gun" would be for a novice shooter?

I have been looking at many different makes and models, and only a couple really stand out...

One more then other for the price mostly, but also because of friends that have told me about it...

The Springfield XD from http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/default.asp?Pg=8&do=3&mcid=1&scid=26&pid=87

Can anyone suggest a better option for a first as there are so many to choose from :S

Thanks for the info,

Pat

You should go through the last few pages of threads in this section, there are a few dealing with suggestions, such as:

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=227117

As a suggestion, you should also tell us what you want to do with it, how much you are going to be shooting, and.......... when you expect to get your second pistol. ;) :D (you can never stop at just one)

Instead of the XD, you might try a S&W M&P or a Glock, other suggestions for an all steel gun would be a CZ.

If you are looking for a 22, then go with a Ruger.

Well as for what I'll be doing with it... mostly just target practice... maybe eventually soem competition stuff... As for getting my second pistol... I had planned on getting one, then an AR... As for getting a .22... I want a bit more bang in it if you know what I mean :p

I would go for a Glock or S&W M&P. They are cheaper and servicable north of the border.
Just buy something and start shooting! This addiction is such that you are destined to own every handgun ever made at least once!

Depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. Lots of people will suggest a .22. I didn't go that way myself and while I'm not the best shot, lack of practice time with my competition pistol is the problem, not the caliber.

There are lot's of people with strong personal preferences for particular manufacturers. Don't be too brainwashed by other people's opinion. What's good for them might not be good for you.

Decide on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. Don't forget accessories like mags, belt, holster, case, trigger locks ect. All this stuff adds up.

1911's from any major maker are good quality. Price differences jump significantly for features which may not mean much to a non competitive target shooter. Kimber, Para, STI, SVI, Colt are all good options. Single action, single or double stack, 40 or 45 cal will be easiest to get you money out of later if you decide to sell it. 9mm or .38super will appeal to a smaller crowd.

Glocks are the status quo for the double action. Cheap and reliable.

H&K's, Sigs are also popular DA pistols but in a higher price bracket.

Before you buy anything, go find a club, make some friends and try their guns. Don't be cheap, pay for ammo. Find what fits you best and what you shoot well and enjoy shooting. Shoot hundreds of rounds before you buy anything. If you don't you may end up buying a second pistol a year from now, not that that's a bad thing right?

for my first two handguns in the summer im planning a russian tok (7.62x25) and a ruger mk3 (.22)

a major concern for me right now is the cost of ammo, its expensive and i dont reload just yet

here's a quick price comparison (using prices from one of the sponsors at the top)
9x19 - 2000 rounds - $460
.40 - 2000 - $550
.45 - 2000 - $730

and .22 for 2000 is around $60-$70
7.62x25 for 2280 is $225

so for now ill stick to cheaper stuff, once i have a steady paying job and a bit more income (im a student right now) ill go for the bigger stuff

I'd look for something with affordable ammunition, a good trigger and adjustable sights. There a number of good 22 auto's that come to mind, 38/357 revolvers, and 1911 based auto's. I'd get one of each. Without a good trigger and sights, shooting pistols accurately is an exercise in frustration.

If you purchase a (centrefire) model that also has a .22LR conversion kit, you can have the best of both - and whenever you choose. Be mindful.

You have to honestly evaluate your primary intended use.

Target practice, competition...Olympic?, service conditions?, PPC?, IPSC?, IDPA?, IHMSA?, NRA? They aren't the same and, as they are specialized tools, few firearms are ideal for many sports. Only you know what you mean when you say, "target practice...maybe competition..."

If you buy too soon, your choice may not match your application.

I would suggest a glock 17 (9mm) or glock 22 (.40S&W). They are very dependable, easy to obtain, easy to clean/service and no take-down tools (paper clip) required. You can find lots on the EE. Since the grip is hard plastic, a hogue slip on grip is a nice accessory to add. They're fairly accurate and the trigger safety simplifies things a bit if you should decide to take your Black Badge course and shoot at IPSC matches. In that case, its easy to find holsters and mag holders for Glocks and Glock mags. Its a great "first" handgun. IMO, a 1911 (.45) is a great "second" handgun. (Like bread & butter)

XD is a great gun, parts may be a little hard to obtain, I went to CZ and Glock for this matter. XD, Glock and M&P sell like hot cake this day, you won't go wrong with either one. If you are interest in All steel gun, take a look at the CZ line. They are very sweet shooter and won't break your bank.
