So I tried taking out the gas cylinder plug from my M1A, wanted to check out the measurements of the piston, anyways, that thing is a bear to remove, didn't even budge it. the rifle was turning in my hand long before I could even turn the plug.

Guess thats why they came up with Gas Cylinder Wrenches. :D

The Gas Plug is just a 3/8" wrench.

I'm referring to the Gas cylinder wrench giving you more leverage to help you remove the plug. Cause its ether I'm not all that strong or SAI has this plug in good and tight.

Dimitri wrap the gas cylinder with a dish towel and put it in the vise to hold it.You do have a vise, right.Every good machinist has a vise.OK no vise, then hold it with a pair of channel locks or vise grips with the metal protected of course.Oh now you have another project look on e pay and build one.

Hey, if you do make a gas cylinder wrench, then i'll definitely buy 4 of them. Damn things are 50 bucks from brownells, I dont know how they justify that price for a piece of aluminum with 2 large holes drilled in it.

Aluminum? Blasphemy, must be made out of 1018 CRS or better steel. :dancingbanana:

This is based on the measurements from my Gas cylinder, a SAI M1A, not sure if the Norinco ones are different. :)

Don't even need a mill to make these, anyone with a hack saw, drill (preferably drill press) and a file could make them I'd imagine.

One thing though, a mill would be nice to keep the 2 holes for the cylinder as close to the proper size as possible. :)

By the way I made a math mistake D'OH! Edited the drawing with the right center distance dimension. Not much different but still.

I've even heard the use of plastic (UHMW ,etc) works. Probably have to be thick so as not to spread but you wouldn't ever worry about marking up your baby.

Yeah, this is the right tool for the right job... nice. ;)

What happens if you don't use a gas cylinder wrench and just use the 3/8 gas plug wrench that comes with the rifle? Will you knock the gas system out of alignment?

Were soldiers issued gas cylinder wrenches?
