Hey all,
Last week I took apart my 870 for cleaning and inspection. First time for me on this one, but done it a few times on friend's shotties. But, I have no idea why, I just can't get the actions bars back in their slots. The ledt one seems like it will slick in, but the right one is rubbing against the receiver, and no matter what I do , I can't have it to fit back in it's slot. Even chipped a bit the metal on it trying to make it fit. But now, a week later, I have nothing to do and want to take it back together... HELP PLZ!!!
 
First thing is try Remington's website and look at their manual, it will tell and show you exactly what to do. If that doesn't work then give a shout back.....

Please don't chip anything to make anything fit. When done properly everything goes together easy. Assuming that you have the bolt correctly mounted in the notch on the slide bars, attempt to put the bolt and the two slide bars into the action together and hold them steady at the point they seem to get caught up. Reach in with your fingers and feel for the spot that the action bar seems to get caught. At that point there is a flat spring inside that needs to be pressed against the side of the receiver to allow the slide bar to pass. Usually finger inside and thumb outside and pinch!

Hope that works! If you can not find a picture on line somewhere, you might try asking a gun smith in the smith section of this forum. There must be somone who has digital pics of the operation. It is something that happens on a regular basis.
 
As Covey says and the flat springs are the shell retainer latches and there is one on each side of the receiver at the front bottom of the receiver where it meets the magazine tube. You hold the gun in your right hand with muzzle slightly up and bring the bolt/foreand assemby back until you feel pressure. Reach in with your left hand thumb and press the right side latch and the bolt weill fall back about 1/8". NExt try to use your pointer finger of the left hand and press the left shell retaining latch..the bolt should fall back some more, if it doesn't you sometime need to move the assembly forward about 1/16" before you can slide it backward for it to work. If you did it all properly then it should slide into the action assembly easily.

To fully open the action you will be cocking the hammer so it will take the normal ammount of cycling effort. Don't force anything, after a couple hundred times it will be second nature. If you need pics send me a pm and I will do some up for you.

shell retainer latches? I had a brain freeze and could only think of calling em doo hickies:D
