NP29s

Just got my NP29 from CanAm yesterday. Stripped, cleaned, relubed, can't wait for a chance to hit the range. :)

One thing though - anyone else find the magazines are not ejecting upon release? They'll spring out about a quarter inch or so then stop. What's the most likely cause of this? Is this a mag issue or something with the gun? This is my first 1911.

Thanks,
NSW

remove the rubber grips and try to eject the magazine again. if the same thing happens then it is likely a magazine issue, or burrs on the inside of pistol frame

if the issue disappears, then there is too much material on the grip binding the magazine.

let me know if this works.

Got mine today too. Good work, Canada Ammo!......Just had time to wipe the packing grease off the outside and the mags.

Before you do that..............

It is most likely the poorly machined mag release. Common on Norc's

- Take the whole top end off and take out the mag.
- Take a look down the mag channel/well from the top, and see how the mag release when fully depressed now actually protrudes from the opposite side of the magwell.
- The mag release needs to be ground down so that when fully depressed there is nothing protruding inside the mag channel/well, so the mag will drop.
- The magazine release is removed by turning the screw on the opposite side of the button.

I had to do this on both my own and buddies 1911 in .45 acp.

A dremel will fix it up real quick.

range report

Went to the range last night and shot 150 rounds of reloaded 147gr, mostly in 5-shot strings, slow and steady. Just getting a feel for the gun, the trigger, the controls, etc.

Wow she prints nice. Shooting at distances between 5 and 7 yards, most of the strings were within a toonie-sized circle. A little faster and they started drifting left and low but I'm sure that's all shooter, not the gun. POI is POA so the sights are right on. The trigger isn't too bad. It could be smoother and maybe it could be lighter. Don't know, I'll have to try out other 1911s to compare. And I look forward to seeing if it improves with use. Lots of use. :)

As others have said about Norinco, the finish is rough. Sharp edges on the slide and the bottom of the magwell. The serrations felt like grabbing a cheese grater. Not that I'm complaining, just an observation. Pulled out the P226 at the end of the session for a few quick shots and the difference is like night and day.

One last thing - the mags. While experimenting with the mag release under different conditions (ie full/empty mag, slide closed or locked open) I found at times my grip was changing slightly and this (I think) is what was causing the mags to stick. I have small hands so there's a bit of a reach for the mag release. Normally, I would just grip tighter, bringing the mag release to the thumb. In effect, this puts fore and aft pressure on the grip because I'm applying backward pressure on the front strap. Doing this, the mags drop free. At other times, I would rotate my hand slightly, bringing the thumb forward to the mag release. The effect of this is my fingers would shift to the front edge of where the right grip meets the frame. Doing this, my hand is actually applying a right-left squeeze on the grip and guess what? Stuck mags.

All in all, I'm happy with the pistol. I'm also very satisfied with CanadaAmmo. Ordered Nov 4, shooting Nov 16.

CanadaAmmo offered to give me free loctite when the extractor set pin on my m213 Norinco came loose. I highly recommend this dealer. I'd get one of these 1911's but I already own a 9mm handgun.

Can't decide if Simple Green or paint thinner is worst in the odor dept.

Even got my CFC reg. paper in the mail today; impress how quick these gov't workers are.

brake cleaner, very toxic, use outdoor unless you want to get high.
paint thinner, I use odorless mineral spirit, less toxic, takes longer to get high, brain cells live a little longer.
simple green, supposedly natural, no high benefit, stinks like grass in the recycling bin after a hot summer week.

Received my NP29 last Friday night. Very satisfied.

For 350$ - you can't go wrong. Yes, the edges are little rough and finish is so-so ... but the metal quality seems to be quite solid the and blued finish is decent.

Since Friday I've detailed stripped a total of 3 times to get things worked --- working the slide, etc. Coming along quite nicely. After I've popped off a few hundred rounds, I'll re-blue, and re-sand things to complete the work-through.

Pretty hard to beat $350 w free shipping. Metal is solid, heft makes it kick a lot less than my G17. First 100 rnds on light reloads got some FTE but Slide and trigger is starting to smooth out.

Edges are rough, slipped and cut myself on the rear serration.

Too bad don't come in .40S&W
