so i know of 2 possible options available but maybe you guys have some other recommendations for a .223 firing semi-auto rifle
the maccabee defense slr and bushmaster acr dmr. the latter i heard is quite on the heavy side and pricey to boot.
thinking of just buying the maccabee receiver set for now and worrying about a build a little later but anyone done one and what was the overall final cost?

For starters all AR-15's are restricted by name. There is technically no such thing as a non-restricted AR-15 in Canada. That being said there are two pseudo AR15 platforms that use all standard AR-15 components while maintaining slightly different receiver halves which qualify them as not being an AR-15 by design. Those are the Alberta tactical rifle supplies modern Sporter and the Maccabee defense Industries SLR.

Anything else like a Robinson Armament xcr, Bushmaster ACR, WK 180, etc. are all just other black rifles, and while some may maintain some of the AR15 platforms ergonomics or outward appearance, they certainly are not AR15 like in design or parts compatibility for the most part.

The Alberta tactical rifle supplies modern Sporter is in my opinion the better of the two non-restricted capable pseudo AR15 designs. Unlike it's competition, it maintains a largely AR like outward appearance and uses a proper takedown pin design to separate the receiver halves, and also has a higher rate of parts compatibility along with a higher quality feel.

Both of the pseudo AR-15 receiver sets start at just a little over $1,000 and then require you 2 purchase all of your own parts to assemble a firearm as you wish. It is possible to be all in for less than $1500, I have a friend who built a NEA honey badger clone with some ee bought parts for like $1450.

The only NR receiver set that hasn't really have any issues that i've read is the ATRS MS.

BCL 102 - not even sure you even need to mention this, trash
Macabee - still need to do some machining with new receivers, no thanks
Stag - as mentioned above, not .223

They will all be banned with the AR15 since semi auto or additionally has mag, pistol grip and is black

Sure glad I no longer own any of these scary black "not an AR15" rifles. I can sleep soundly at night knowing that a ban won't affect me.

thanks for the info.. i had not come across the ATRS modern sporter in my searches. only issue i see is delivery time for spring 2020. i want to be optimistic about the next election but should the libs win again, i potentially won't get it in time before the ban

I would contact them before dismissing them. There may be options you are not aware of that may help with your situation.

Slr or modern sporter. Slr is available now. Modern sporter is not... get the one available now. If you hate it grab the other one and switch the bits to it after.

My AR told me that it was born in the wrong receiver and classification. So in support of my AR's identity, I decided to fund its transition process and ordered the ATRS MS receiver set.

Well, i can only speak for the rifles i know, i bought 2 X WK180C for my twin grandkids.

They have well over 1K rounds tru each, those rifle are reliable and accurate, i would buy more.
