I know it says multi cal on the side of the ACR, but what should I shoot .223 , 5.56? Ian from Herron Arms built me a custom barrel 18.7" barrel with I believe a 1:7 twist, and he closed up shop for a bit so not gonna get any answers anytime soon from him. I get a lot of answers from other threads but there all different. So what kind of bullet should i use? Grain size? I WANT THE BEST, and I plan on getting a case of 1000 so what should I be looking at? Im still new to this stuff No Norinco sh*t, i don't buy anything gun from commies. I have a passionate hated for commies!!

Mine (non-restricted Herron Arms ACR conversion) is a tack driver, but I handload. Winchester case, benchmark powder, cci small rifle primer, and a Barnes 50gr varmint grenade. I've been using this combination with great success on coyotes out to 300 yards and it will hold just under an inch at 100.

I specifically and purposely asked Ian to use a 5.56x45 NATO spec reamer....i wanted the slightly larger chamber specs as I think a tight chamber on an auto loader can be dangerous. I'm not sure what he would have used for yours as when I did mine he had both .223 and 5.56 reamers available.

I also have a pile of Winchester whitebox 55gr and 62gr FMJ that I keep as my rainy day stores....I have not stretched its legs outside yet, but it seems to work great at the shorter 25 and 50 meter indoor ranges we have in Calgary.

Good luck!

Bullet weight , and length must be decided. What are you planning to use this for? Try google . The ( greenhill formula ) may help you decide . Cheers

Mine is 5.56, but I bought it already converted. I would have thought if I did my own custom I would have it reamed to .223 Wylde (kinda between 5.56 and .223), but I'm happy with the 5.56 chamber now.

I can shoot all my 5.56 surplus as well as my stiff .223 handloads.

The ACR in NR format is AWESOME. I'm not spending another dime on my AR platform... in fact, I'll probably sell it!

Compromise between .223 Rem and 5.56N and make it in 223 Wylde.

It always amazes me how folks can get custom work done on their rifles, in particuliar NR conversion (be it on a Swiss Carbine/CQB or ACR) and not know EXACTLY what they are getting...I *think* the twist rate is...I *think* the chambering is...Especially when wanting and expecting the best.

WTF??!

And what polococta said. The .223 Wylde is a great choice.

Start by throwing some federal premium gold metal match .223 69gr. Fairly easy to find. Should do well with your 1:7.
You can get it locally at erie tracker in port colborne or lanz shooting supply in st anns.
Most 5.56 you find won't do your rifles accuracy any justice imho

I was just talking to a guy at a shop in B.C that had his converted NR, He had a 1-8 twist on 223 wylde. He was claiming very good sub MOA out to 200 yards with ... i think he said around a 70gr bullet. I didnt see it, but have no reason to thin he's bsing. I think when i put one together ill be leaning on 223 wylde as well

Didn't the new barrel get stamped? Or at least come with a note?
I can't imagine a gunsmith would make a barrel without even the most basic ass covering for when someone shoots the wrong caliber through it and something goes wrong. Or more than likely, when someone shoots the wrong weight bullet and then cries that their custom barrel sucks.

Or did you not get the gun back yet?

I think the op said it was stamped for both .223 and 5.56. Same as my hk sl8

Hey BenL Sorry I don't know i'm still trying to figure this out.

Would you have the courage to say that in front of my face?? doubt it.

Yah I got the gun back, he shut down for a few weeks, so there no point trying to get a hold of him.

the barrel is not stamped at all, just looked. Ill have to wait to ask him then, highly doubt he'll remember though, unless he has notes written down.

Ian's 'default' is a 5.56 reamer unless you ask differently.

He does have notes - he will tell you chamber if you need to confirm. But very good chance it's 5.56mm.
