Hey, I just got the shotgun described as above and its in fair condition and the forearm is loose and ideas how i could make it tighter? Its the type that just kinda pivots into place then locks down, but its not tight at all.

thanks guys, I will post pics of the forearm if need be :)

Oh, what a tangled web ...

The following is pieced together from sources on the net.

"N.R. Davis & Sons were manufacturers of percussion, and later, cartridge shotguns from 1853 to 1919. Davis shotguns were well made and tried to live up to the companies motto "As Good As The Best".

Crescent began business in 1888 and made single and double barrel shotguns in Norwich, CT until 1893. Crescent then merged with N. R. Davis and Sons but soon the new company was absorbed by another company, H. D. Folsum. Folsum made shotguns under the brand name American Gun Company of NY, but also made guns for other brand names. In about 1930, the J. Stevens Gun Company acquired the Crescent business and soon merged it with another called the Davis Warner Arms Corp, successor to N. R. Davis & Sons. The resulting company was called Crescent-Davis. Stevens continued to sell guns marked with some variation of the Crescent name until 1941."

You probably just need a new spring for your fore end, but it is possible that something is worn out. Without disassembly and examination it is impossible to tell.

I have an NR Davis SxS 12 gauge sitting on my mantle....de-activated. I bought it used a couple of years ago and had a chamber on it split after firing several boxes of ammo through it. It had a two piece chamber with a sleeve that appeared to be soft soldered into place. The sleeve split on me, so I de-activated it and mounted it for the mantle.

I just removed the forend from mine and took it apart to try and help you out. The detent that acts on the forend hanger is held in place with a approx 1/16" solid cross pin. Drive this out and the detent and spring will come out (do it under control in a garment bag or a box as there is spring tension on the detent). You likely need to replace your spring with a longer one....hope this helps...it may also help to file the detent and its recess in the forend hanger to a sharper point, but I'ld try replacing the spring first....let us know how you make out...

Thanks guys, so my shotgun is pretty old then. iIfigured it was about 40-50 years old but thats cool its even older... The bores are like brand new and just as shiny as my winchester 1300 that is only 9 years old and very well taken care of.

gunasauras- What kind of ammo were you shooting out of your NR davis? Are they 2 3/4" or 2 1/2" chambers?

Oh and how do you tell what the chokes are? I dont have an I.D. micrometer either.

I was shooting 2 3/4" shells out of it. Never did measure the chamber though.....I have a choke gauge, that's how I measured my choke though...
