NR for dangerous game in Ontario

Well, nothing like a bear defense thread to get the day started....

I'd go with a 14" barrel 20 gauge pump action with a recoil pad, loaded with slugs or buckshot. There is one on the EE right now, actually for $325

Put a cheek rest, ammo holder on the stock ala ebay from Ukraine leather style.
Here's a link to one I like

these can be ordered in LH or RH, Black or Brown. 12 or 20 gauge, you can just note which version you want when paying.

Another choice is a Remington 7600 in carbine or police form (18.5" barrel in 308).

Or, the Remington 7615 (16.5" barrel), either in 223 with LAR15 mags, or .308.

There is NO DANGEROUS GAME IN ONTARIO...

Carry whatever you like to shoot...

For hunting, make it a 6.5mm and up for bears... coyotes and wolves can be taken with whatever you happen to be carrying.

maybe add a 30-06 to this list....great choices

Most bear charges are bluffs so wave your arms and shout. Pepper spray is more effective at stopping or diverting a charging bear than a firearm. Not much chance of hitting the brain stem on a charging animal.

I hunt in that area every year. Any hunting rifle will work, from a LEE Enfield, to a 30 06, 308 etc.
When I'm not hunting up there I carry a short barreled 12 gage loaded with slugs.

I live nine hours north of you. I've managed to get my wife into a fine bearanoia state too. She will not go into the bush or on a canoe trip with me unless there is a gun present. I have bought countless guns under the bear pretence. She even bought me a new BLR .308 for canoetripping. So milk it for what it is worth. When I'm on my own, if it's not hunting season, I don't take anything. If I'm guiding a canoe trip with bearanoia folks, I take my Maverick 88 12 guage with an 18 inch barrel. Cheap, ugly and good to go.

Ha ha, just remembered that for a while I had her convinced that the SKS was the ultimate bear gun, had three of them and a lot of ammo.

lolllll

A good dog wont let any animals close to you. Nothing wrong with having a gun around the camp, I would go with a Rem 750 Carbine in .308 or a Semi shotgun with buckshot.
Good Luck with your property.

I grew up in the middle of the bush between Sudbury and Timmins... Lots of wildlife encounters. Never did I really feel theatened. Multiple bear runins while fishing, baiting and tree planting. Yelling and waving around like an idiot always did the trick. Wolves are in abundance, but not a safety issue. If you do want a gun while in the woods, look for something light.

With all that said, I wish my wife was worried to go into the woods and requested I get a gun for that. Run with it while you can!
