NR m14

great great -- it sounds exciting.
i know, a few minute search through sponsored dealers you'll find a plethora of oddities to add to these rifles, to suit any persons fancy. i'm surprised to find that a lot of the add-ons are relatively priced.
perhaps i'll get the one that needs the work, there is no greater joy than building something from nothing.

Do it.
These are guns that you can tinker with all day long and tweak for little or no cost.
The DA Socoms seem popular right now, but if you want to keep it cheap ( much more fun ) I would look for a shorty on the EE.
Apart from the gas lock sight and MB they are the same, with pretty much the same issues.
I would advise anyone to try and get a pre 2009 if they can, but which ever one you get you are going to have a great time with it.
The guys on here ( and women to be PC ) have worked out solutions to nearly all the issues except the friggin flyer LOL, and are great at sharing what they know with others.
Get to a Clinic and you will have a blast and know more about your gun than a lot of pple ever will.
If you like getting it done yourself, you wont regret it for one minute, and there is NO danger of screwing up a 2000 dollar rifle eh LOL.

"...Is Norinco a bad purchase?..." Nope. They're as close as you'll get to an M-14 without buying a Springfield Armory M1A. Mind you, they do appear from postings here to be sporadic in QC.
Mine is an evil semi'd real Winchester M-14. S'ok, but it ain't an M1 Rifle.

I bought my Norinco M-14S about ten years ago for $499 NIB. Amazing purchase, fired thousands of rounds through it, not one single jam, very relaible and very accurate.....Yes, accurate. Using iron sights, 100/200 yards consistent hits centre mass, 200 yard groupings the size of a small dinner plate....Very impressed. Plus I have a super bad-@$$ synthetic cammo stock in CADPAT pattern....looks Sooooo ###y. One of my Fav rifles I own.

I would LOVE a NIB Springfield Armory M1A Loaded Walnut with stainless barrel, but $2,240.00 is VERY steep. My $500 Norinco has served me well LOL :) ...and with the synthetic camo stock, it looks amazing.

The M-14 rifle is the best rifle out there. Non-restricted, take it out anywhere, plinking outdoors, up north on crown land, SUPER accurate, and that massive 7.62 NATO has some serious penetration and stopping power.

If is was being charged by a 1,000 pound male grizzly bear defending it's territory, a pump shotgun would be iffy.....I would feel most confident with an M-14 dumping out a 20- shot mag of lethal 7.62 NATO ...some premium Barnes ammo 150 grain tipped bonded copper hollow points with double expansion, and deep penetration, expending all it's energy inside that massive grizzly bear....20 shots of lethal precision....the M-14 rifle can't be beat.

Wish I had a Springfield Armory M1A Loaded Walnut with stainless Match barrel....such a breathtaking work of art. The Super Match M1A with McMillan camo stock is my Ultimate choose though.....but 4K is waaaay outta my reach. Maybe if I won the lotto ;)

Lol.. yes yes I know. But 1800 for an an action I've never shot before, im a hunter mostly. Not too into target shooting.
So please forgive my ignorance I don't mean to offend. I just wanted an introductory rifle. Something I can put my hands on, throw a few rounds downrange at paper zombies. LOL!
Is norinco a bad purchase?
Some people are anti Norinco and that's just fine.
I'll give you my honest opinion coming from someone who owns a Springfield Armory M1A National Match and a Norinco.

The Springfield M1A NM when you can find them go for $2,400 +TX and shipping.
It is a beautifully finished rifle right out of the box as it should be for that kind of money.
Even though the National Match has plenty of hand fitting which is evident when you take it apart mine still had a gas lock that was loose.
Thankfully at one of Barney's clinics I was able to find another one that fit perfectly without the need to shim it.

I also bought a 2012 Norinco shorty 18.6" barrel non restricted.
The rifle had some issues such as a loose op rod guide, loose gas lock, over clocked barrel, crappy rear sight which would almost fall apart, and a gritty trigger.
All of these issues were addressed at one of Barney's M14 clinics with the exception of the over indexed barrel due to the lack of a bench that could support a barrel vise.

Despite all of these shortcomings the rifle has never had a jam or misfire of any kind and I wouldn't hesitate to take it hunting or shooting.
If you are a hands on type of guy I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one of these rifles.
From what I have seen and heard the 2013 rifles are even better than the 2012 models.

You may be able to find one in the EE that has already been through one of Barney's clinics for a little more money.

Here is a pic of my National Match.

So a guy walks into a paint store with an M14 and the clerk starts emptying out the cash register and handing him all the money. So the guy with the rifle says no no I'm not here to rob you. I just want a can of paint that matches my gun!

This was more than the OP is willing to pay, but out of the box shoots tight. But same basic m1a national match super.

A nice M1A M21 Supermatch Tactical would be welcome in my herd, those M1A and at some point even those Socom 18 are soooo addictives, those are charismatic rifles... JP.
