There've been at least 2 occasions when I was in an American LGS and had to swallow my gum after hearing a 22 LR firearm described to a new-to-firearms person as 'ideal for self defense' but now there's this product, the first .22 LR ammo I've actually seen marketed for that very purpose. Anyway, as an obedient Canadian, I do wonder what the stuff's long range target accuracy might be, supposing it will ever find its way here.

Federal’s Punch 22 LR has been honored with the 2022 NRA Women Gear of the Year Golden Bullseye Award. Federal will be recognized in association with the award during a special reception on Friday, May 27, 2022, at the 2022 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Houston, Texas.

“Until Federal’s introduction of Punch 22 LR, there wasn’t a self-defense option for this platform,” stated Rick Stoeckel, Federal’s Product Director of Rimfire ammunition. “Defense with a handgun isn’t one size fits all. Different shooters have different needs based on their firearm selection. We are proud and grateful to receive this award.”

The first-of-its-kind 29-grain nickel-plated lead-core bullet is pushed at maximum velocities for the deepest penetration through short-barrel handguns. So, whether you want to carry a 22 LR pistol as a backup gun, don’t feel comfortable with centerfire pistols, or simply want to get more versatility from your rimfire, Punch makes the 22 LR cartridge a viable choice.

The NRA Publications Golden Bullseye Awards acknowledge the finest products available in the shooting sports. To qualify for consideration for a Golden Bullseye Award, the product must meet a variety of demanding criteria on design, function, value and overall contribution to the shooting industry.

Federal’s Punch 22 LR bullet itself is a departure from standard 22 LR design. It features a flat nose and utilizes a heavy nickel-plated jacket around a lead core. So not only does it travel faster than competing 22 projectiles, but its design also deliberately minimizes expansion and retains weight to maintain sufficient straight-line penetration. That is a lot to ask from a .22 bullet, which is why other manufacturers have shied away from the challenge. But Federal’s engineering team pulled it off, giving America’s favorite cartridge a chance to prove itself for protection.

Paul Harrell reviewed this ammo, I don't think he liked it much. NRA also gave Federal's goofy split buckshot an award this year. They seem to be picking gimmicks over ammunition with excellent qualities.

The muzzle velocity you quoted is out of a 2" barreled hand gun, it is 1,650 fps out of a 24" rifle barrel.

Most .22lr muzzle velocities are not measured out of 2" barrels.

Thanks. Didn't notice that at first. It's actually 1,070 fps through 2-inch barrel handguns, 1,650 fps out of 24-inch rifle. Still Meh IMO. Aguila Supermaximum moves a 30Gr CPRN 1700FPS but whatever, as another poster mentioned, it's a gimmick

I doubt the nickel plating does enough to make it a qualifier for that purpose.

That being said, some people can hit several shots in a shorter time to deter a threat, which could end it earlier.

There are also many cases where a 22 in the wrong hands can kill someone. Just takes a high amount of luck/fate intervention to accomplish that.

Perhaps they mean self defence as a whole not as against human threats alone

I bought a case of this when it was available at Tenda earlier last year. Probably more gimmicky and a niche market anyways but it sold out fairly quickly
