Posted this here as it's not necessarily firearms politics, but more of a hunting article. Seems our NS natural resources minister thinks Sunday hunting wouldn't be 'safe', and that people enjoying the outdoors would feel in danger if Sunday hunting was introduced for big game. It's also ONLY for big game, which is kinda silly, should be able to hunt any game on Sundays in NS

Shooting on Sunday

Provincial Liberal natural resources critic Andrew Younger announced on Nov. 3 that his party will introduce legislation allowing hunters to kill bear, moose and deer on Sundays during Nova Scotia’s big game season.

This year, the overall season runs from Sept. 24 to Dec. 3.

“We see no reason that hunters should not be allowed to take to the woods in pursuit of big game,” said Younger. “The prohibition against big game hunting on Sundays has been in place for far too long and other provinces have moved to allow this practice.”

But just because Nova Scotia is one of only two provinces that don’t allow some form of Sunday hunting (the other being Prince Edward Island) doesn’t mean that Nova Scotia is a behind-the-times backwater on the hunting front.

Arguments against shopping and hunting on Sunday often evoke the Commandment to “remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” And almost undoubtedly, provincial laws against doing all manner of things on Sunday were rooted in Nova Scotia’s Christian heritage.

But in an increasingly secular age, those who oppose such activities on Sunday tend to have practical arguments as opposed to spiritual reasons for doing so.

Those who protested Sunday shopping more often than not made the argument that Sunday is traditionally a “family day” and allowing Sunday shopping would mean store employees would be spending less time with their families.

The people of Nova Scotia voted against allowing Sunday shopping in a binding plebiscite in 2004. But in October 2006, following a Supreme Court of Nova Scotia ruling that the province had overstepped its authority on that front, former premier Rodney MacDonald announced that Sunday shopping would be allowed in the province year-round.

Given the results of the 2004 plebiscite, a lot of people would have been uncomfortable with MacDonald’s decision.

But for those who will oppose allowing hunting on Sunday — and we predict it will be a greater percentage of the population than Younger indicates — it will be about more than feeling uncomfortable; it will be about feeling unsafe.

“We know that hunting is a popular sport ... but Sunday traditionally has been a day that families and individuals like to go hiking and take their pets along, and they know it’s a day that they feel safe out there,” Natural Resources Minister Charlie Parker told the Chronicle Herald.

Parker speaks the truth. Fall is arguably the best season for spending out of doors in Nova Scotia, not only for hunting, but for hiking, birdwatching, horseback riding, taking photos and picking late-season berries.

And during the province’s 10-week big game season, Sunday is the only day of the week many outdoor enthusiasts feel safe — even on their own land — even if the evidence suggests that the vast majority of hunting accidents are self-inflicted and the odds of being injured on the province’s highways are far greater than being shot in the province’s woods.

Peace of mind (not to mention the peace of the countryside) is reason enough to retain an old, widely accepted tradition."

Another example of fear mongering. I guess blood would be running in the woods if Sunday hunting was to be introduced in NS ..

Strange that they don't to have a problem with buying a bottle of liquor on Sunday.
I inquired earlier this year as to why I can go to a casino, shop, go to a strip club, buy booze, etc on Sunday but I cant harvest the bounty God put here for us ,and got this response.

Robert Cameron,

Thank you for online inquiry on the matter of Sunday hunting.

The Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources appreciates that many hunters in Nova Scotia have work and/or other obligations which leave them few days to enjoy our fall hunting seasons. The possibility of Sunday hunting has been raised many times over the years by individuals and wildlife organizations. There is strong public resistance to Sunday hunting and the department does not intend, at this time, to introduce changes to our legislation.

Our current legislation provides equitable access to and use of our natural resources to all Nova Scotians. At the same time, the department must minimize conflict between divergent user interests by ensuring we offer opportunities to both hunters and non hunters. Although hunting is a very safe activity, a large percentage of the public will not walk in the woods when hunting is permitted for fear of an accident. Non-hunters have the same rights and privileges as hunters in terms of access to Nova Scotia's wildlife and lands. These people, as well as hunters, also enjoy going into the woods during the fall. We try to balance our approach to accommodate both hunters and non-hunters.

Many other Canadian jurisdictions permit some level of hunting on Sundays, though most do not permit Sunday hunting in their more developed/occupied areas. These jurisdictions have the advantage of having sparsely populated and extensive Crown land holdings where access is limited. In Nova Scotia over 70 per cent of the land is privately owned, and much of the forested areas are in or near settlements and accessible to the public.

Thank you for your interest on this matter and trust the information provided will help you in understanding why Sunday hunting is not permitted in Nova Scotia.

It is just a few years ago that Saskatchewan finally allowed Sunday hunting. It is a non-issue now. The argument that it doubles the hunting time for a lot of people is what opened my eyes. I was self-employed for 30 years prior to 1995, and mostly hunted whenever the mood struck.

There were great discussions, pointing out the positive and negative aspects, but, in the end, Sunday hunting is now allowed. I think it is a great idea.

Go figure, the same province that does not allow hunting of spruce grouse because:
"They are too easy to hunt & they'll be wiped out by hunters" Funny the rest of Canadian hunters do not have this afflicition for some strange reason! ;)

We really are a backwards bunch here. Voted against Sunday shopping and got it anyway. Want Sunday hunting but won't get it.

I wrote to the natural resources minister and got the same canned response as posted above.

We won't get Sunday hunting this time either. This is just posturing on the part of the Liberals. They know the NDP won't pass it but they will be able to say "we tried, vote for us next time".

The wheels of change grind exceedingly slow and only 1/2 that speed here.

I hope I will be proven wrong about this.

Charlie Paker... He likes the sound of his own voice. What a joke Christian tradition, just like the Casino, liquor stores, and Bars with strippers. All open Sunday so I can get my A-men on! I would pay $20 extra just to be able to hunt today.

Absolutely ridicuous.... a man works 5 days a week and gets two off.... You guys should be free to hunt on Sundays.... If people want to feel "safe" while hiking then they should wear blaze orange or go to a posted hiking trail.... not to mention the fact that while you are working that 5 days a week the money you are making is taxed and goes partially to your province so they can put legislation in place to tell you that you can't hunt on your own land on one of your two measly days off....

As far as the "sabbath" BS.... what holier activity is there than getting close to nature and harvesting it's bounty?....

Really? There is no Spruce Grouse season in NS?
As a kid growing up in NS, I knew this to be so. I found an old referance in a posted on-line publication named Farmer's Bulletin that pointed this out too. In the current regulations I could not find it though??
Strange as that may be.
In the 2011 NS small game open season file listing, was snowshoehare, ruffed grouse, male pheasant and it did say no open season on hungarian partridge. Although obviously huns must exist in NS or they wouldn't name it at all. One would assume if it's not listed here in the open seasons, therefore no open season exists for spruce grouse there. Maybe 'they' are trying to downplay this ridiculous & outdated game law?
I tried to access 28gauge.org that had a short blurb on franklin's grouse prohibited hunting there, but the webpage could not be accessed. IMO unless the NS regulations changed in 1987 or 1990 this is still true for NS.

Maybe a current resident can chime in please.....

Behind the times for sure, I sympathize with NS hunters. Hunting is a very safe sport as he mentions, so education of the public rather than legislation is the logical course of action.

Not only that, only allowing hunting on one weekend day would increase the risk of accident - wouldn't it be better to have the hunting population spaced out in the woods over 2 days instead of one?

If everyone from NS would email these guys regarding their desire to hunt on Sunday I bet the regs would be changed by next year. I find here in NS most people can find time to complain but cant take 10min to send an e-mail.

I feel for you guys out east. We had the BS rule here most of us working people could only hunt weekends so really one day a week was all a guy could hunt here. Now we get Sundays and get to hunt 2 days a week it was awesome when they changed that rule. Good luck on the fight.
