Hi CGNers,

I was browsing the internet in search of a good deal on custom action for a PRS build I am planning and came across this rifle ...

https://www.americanrifle.com/shop/product/r-m9g2-tsr-473-20-6-5cm-nucleus-gen2-rifle-1200?category=15

Wondering if anyone has seen or held this and what you think of it.

To raise an old semantic demate, there's nothing custom about that action.

The Savage or the Nucleus?

I would argue that the Nucleus is very much a custom action and runs much smoother then a Savage. I have a Savage and bolt bind up on cycle is a real thing. Quiet frustrating at times.

That deal is quite good if Tom can get another one in for you. I haven't handled the xylo chassis but I do have 2 nucleus actions. I have a gen 1.1 in a short action and a gen 1.1 in a long action. I absolutely love them and have 0 complaints. I run trigger tech specials and have never had a misfire or any issue for that matter. They continuously get smoother and smoother.

Not sure why someone would suggest a savage as a comparable rifle, or say the nucleus isn't a custom action.

No experience with the Gen 2 but I have a Gen 1.0 Nucleus that has seen about 15k rounds and it's never had an issue. Not sure why anyone would compare a Savage to a Nucleus?

Savage.. lol.

ARC makes a nice action, the Nucleus being their budget option. Others to look at would be the Zermatt Origin and the Defiance Tenacity.

I don't think you'll find many people with negative opinions on the above actions. Those who compare them to a Savage should be promptly ignored.

Barnard P....for the win!
&
A true 2 stage trigger group.....included....that is NOT a Remington pattern/concoction.

Floating bolt heads & Bbl nuts are for mall ninja/couch potatoes.

I've heard nothing but excellent things about Barnard.

However, they're not designed for the application the OP is looking for. Tight benchrest clearances + adverse field conditions is not a good combo.

To keep the car analogies going, buying a Barnard for PRS is like buying a Bugatti and putting a lift kit on it to compete in the Baja 1000. The OP needs a trophy truck.

kt,
A Barnard P or S fat body 3 lug bolt is not of 'air bearing" tolerances of a BAT.

Nothing,Nothing is TIMED as per a Barnard.
Second by design would be a Borden.
Third a Stolle/Kelbly.
MT manufactured receivers are monkey see, monkey do....nothing designed, just a bad unauthorized copy.

The CRF/Push Feed design was first introduced years ago by TL Tech/PA & used an engineered M14/Garand type extractor w/ plunger ejector.

The ARC bolt stop/release on the same side of the receiver as the bolt handle-retarded at best.
Ejector slot cut in bolt lug is dangerous...no matter who/what/when/where it was designed or heat treated.

We all make educated decisions-
Choose wisely!!

(bias, yes,as I do NOT support USA BLUE STATE manufacturers)

I have nothing against Barnard's, I've heard nothing but great things about them. I'm curious about their SMS action, but cautiously optimistic as I haven't seen or heard of anyone fielding one in PRS events or in adverse conditions in general. There's different criteria, constraints and objectives between a BR gun and a PRS gun, and I'm not convinced that an action manufacturer that's been focused on pretty much solely BR type disciplines understands the nuances required to make an action fit for purpose for PRS type disciplines.

Ted makes great stuff, and he puts a lot of thought into his actions and products. Not sure if I agree with your ejector slot comment, Ted rigorously designs and tests his products, there's been thousands of his actions in the wild with no issues related to that matter. If you are curious about the safety of his actions, you can read up this section here which is in regards to his Mausingfield action, which shares a lot of similar features with the Nucleus: https://www.americanrifle.com/shop/product/mausingfield-bolt-action-2?category=5

Also, keep in mind that the OP is looking at an entire rifle package. It would be difficult to find as feature rich of a rifle package as the OP is looking at, designed with disciplines such as PRS in mind, at that price point.

Hirsch Precision here in Nova Scotia just put together a barreled action for me. We went with a Barnard SMS action ( Rem700 footprint ), Krieger barrel, and TT Diamond trigger. Just waiting on a MPA BA chassis that Insite Arms is sending out today. This SMS action is incredibly slick/smooth ! My F-class rifle is built on a Borden action and I've got a PR rifle built on a KS Arms Wolverine action....but this Barnard seems smoother. Now, we don't have sandy/dusty conditions like Arizona or alot of other places, but I'm thinking that this action will work just fine. When I get it all together, I'll post pictures and let you know how it works out.Just want to say thanks to Hirsch Precision for making this happen!

I look forward to hearing your review on that rifle, sounds like a nice build!

Man almost forgot to check back on this thread ...

I finally ended up buying an Ultimatum deadline from a CGNer. I put it in a MDT ACC Chassis bought from a CGNer. And added a Savage 6.5CM barrel bought from a (you guessed it) CGNer. Added a TriggerTech Special trigger. I will eventually replace the barrel with a Canadian made barrel in 6mm. Not sure yet which exact caliber. So in the end it will be a Canadian Rifle minus the optics (Tangent Theta is very pricey)

I can tell you one thing - that deadline is one solid action. It is smooth, Beefy with an integral recoil lug.

Will post picture soon with some groups after fire lapping the barrel.

Interesting point - I bought a savage 12 FV from cabelas in 308. When I measured the COAL it measured 2.771". I thought that this was a lemon and fixed it by fire lapping the barrel. Then I bought a 6.5CM Savage 12 FV take-off barrel and measured the COAL. It was 2.771" - Mind blown
