I think you might need to go run behind the hounds for a bit there Stephen, there is nothing easy about hunting cougars behind dogs and if you hunt one with the intention of killing it; having it treed gives you a decent opportunity to make a good humane shot. I've seen a few cats in the wild and they don't ever just stand broadside.

Great story Noel, if there was any money in Hunting writing; you might just have to quit your day job.

Hey Jarrod, glad you could stop by the campfire for a read.:D
Glad to hear you enjoyed the story. I take so dang long to type I'm not sure I would make much coin at this. Thanks for the encouragement! I think I got this one off in only an hour and a half!

Good to hear you like to burn the calories trying to keep up with those hounds too. Last year the dogs baying really kept the excitement alive. This year I knew all too well what could happen so I paced myself and enjoyed the experience ten times more.

Thank you for the comments everyone! Now if Nugget would just come out of the closet and tell us about the bacon strip in his shorts we'll all have some more to laugh about! :p

Ted, my techie guy here at work is doin his best to get a clip together and I will put it on asap. It is an interesting one for sure, complete with gunshot, lunging cat, words that are usually expressed under extreme duress of which I have to leave in for effect, mixed together by yelling and myself laughing in the background, all within a period of 15 or 20 seconds. Oh yeah, I forgot about the camera man almost loosing his cookies from all the adreniline. He forgot to stop the tape. It is very amusing indeed.

BigRed, I would invite you out if I could. I'm not sure what the cost of the hunt is, but I know the taxidermist bill is going to finish up close to or just over 3K. I may go for more "walk alongs" but cannot justify spending that kind of coin right now. I can get you in touch with the guide if you are so inclined to "chase da puutty tat". :)

Hey Noel, hows that video clip coming. Its one of those things you gotta see! As far as stained shorts go I think I got away with one there. It all happened so fast. I still break out laughing now about it but at the time I had a million things run through my mind in about 3 secs. Even though it seemed like a close call, I think the cat was just looking for the closest way out and it happened to be right over top of us!! Good thing for a vital shot huh!
I highly recommend a cat to you all! They are an amazing creature, and I have a great respect for this animal. This was a special hunt for me as I was able to take another animal with my grandfathers 270. Its my goal to take one of every big game animal in Canada with it. I got a ways to go yet but I got a good start!! Later all.

Well look who finally showed up!
I haven't heard back from the I.T. guru, but will commence to hassling. After all, I did get him a job here.
Did I miss anything you want to add here Nugget? Feel free to embelish......

I was scared just reading that! Awsome hunt.

As for hunting Cougars without dogs, I seriously doubt you'd ever get close enough to get one... unless you dressed like a little sheep and sat in a clearing crying for a while.

I went to see Wayne Carlton do a clinic on calling game. He told us to be real careful when using any predator call, or even a cow Elk call for that matter. They always circle around to get you from behind. I know for a fact the cow chirp can work wonders with calling in a coyote, so why not another predator too.

Beware.......BEWARE!!!!!!!

Cant get the video for a bit yet guys, will post it when it finally works for us!

Cheers,
Noel

Wow, thanks for taking your time Noel!! Great story well told.

On this calling thing it has been done sucessfully around here I'm just finding out. I might have to look in to this some. Or better yet BIGREDD how bout you come out and do the calling and I'll cover things from a ways out :p

Thanks boys. That was an exciting read. Awesome hunt. Beautiful cat too. Can't wait for some video footage. I bet the area where you guys were falling over getting away is yellow for 4ft in all directions. The tape won't lie:p
