Nuisance Tags For Bancroft Elk

You have to hand it to the MNR,for years the farmers around Bancroft have been begging for a hunt to thin out the herd or the very least make them a little wary of humans. Now on the eve of Ontario's first elk hunt they have also announced harassed farmers will be able get up to THREE tags to remove nuisance elk from their property. According to the article in the Jan.18 edition of the Ontario Farmer, property owners will not be able to realize any financial gain from the nuisance elk they remove. It also says while MNR estimates the herd at 500-600 head, local farmers estimate the herd at closer to 1000 saying the MNR is only counting the herds with radio tracking collared animals. What a waste.
 
Grew up there, have friends and family still in the area...first, what Farmer's are in bancroft lol..second, not many people see these Elk. They were brought into the area, and now they wanna start killing them off again...Makes sense....Epic Fail lol

There are plenty of farms around the Bancroft area. The may not be 1000 acre tracts, but are farms none the less.

The facts are that the Elk do indeed do damage to these little farms. Far more noticable than what would be done to a big farm. I to would be furious If it was my farm that was invaded buy elk where there was none in the past.

You can't just look at the situation from one perspective. If you do then you my friend are the Epic Fail.
 
That's amazing news too bad its only 3 tags per farmer going to make some calls maybe I can get a trophy bull next year with out worrying about a silly draw.

Lots of small hobby sized farms my friend which makes the damage done by elk even more severe. They have totally destroyed some peoples farms that grow crops to feed their cattle or to supplement their income. Not many people see these elk eh? now your the expert? you can see between 75-150elk in one damn soy or corn field drive a bit further and wow another field with 75....They re-introduced them 10yrs ago and said when the herd hit 100 they will open a 5tag draw its been 8yrs since the herd hit 100 and still no season till now when there is 1000 animals.

The epic Fail was the MNR holding off the hunt for 8yrs and allowing the elk to never develop the fear of humans that all game animals should have.

I've seen them lots of time camping in that area. Also talked to lots of ATVers in the area that confirms what I saw.

They were brought back with the promise of being able to hunt them when the population is large enough.
