Hi...can anyone give me any info on these number 2 shotgun primers...I have some new dominion, primed, paper hulls in 20g...box says to reload them with number 2 primers...are these primers totally unique, or can I substitute, say 209's...not sure if they are the same size...any info appreciated...

Thanks
Wayne...

Elwood Epps has several listings for Dominion #2 primers, it says they are designed for black powder shotshells.

Okay so I now realize they can't be substituted with 209's ...not the same size, although large pistol primers haven't heard same measurements and fit well in the hull?...

My uncle taught me how to reload shotshells in 1975. At that time, we were using up his old stocks of Dominion paper hulls and the appropriate primers, powders and card/felt wads. The primers we were using were CIL No. 4 primers. Going by memory, those old primers had a much taller anvil than modern large pistol primers. I assume the Dominion #2 primers would be similar. Large pistol primers might fit in your hulls, but unless the anvil bottoms out in the battery pocket, it is very unlikely that they would work. It might be a fun experiment, just to try a pistol primer in one of those hulls and see if it fires. But except for a SHTF type scenario, I would suggest you not actually load any of those shells using pistol primers.

I did measure both the circumference and the height of the large pistol primers...both measurements were actually "bang on" with the number 2 measurements...I have since installed a lpp into the 20 g hull ...I will next attempt to fire it, primer only...my only concern is will the two be compatible with amount of the charge...I load both large pistol and rifle primers in brass shotshells that I have, so we'll see...

I guess this is what happens when you "assume" stuff. Interesting that the #2 primers and LPP are the same height.

So, installed the large pistol primer no problem, loaded and fired...100 percent with a half dozen loads...not sure of the power difference in the number 2 vs the lpp, but all seems good...

Given your experience with brass cases and large pistol primers, I would load the Large pistol primers in those paper cases and use the same load as you have done previously with the brass cases. Brass produces higher pressures than paper cases, so they will be safe in the paper if they were OK in brass, but the load might be a little weak.
