I'm new to IPSC and going to be shooting production. For those of you who have been competing for a while, how many mags do you have for your competition (production) gun?

Well in reality it's maximum 32 round count for a stage... so if you go by the minimum that's 4 mags, 3 in mag pouches, 1 in gun, rack it, remove magazine replace with fresh, take a cartridge out and place it in the mag you stripped... idealy though? I like having at least 5 (1 stripper mag in back pocket) on me + 1 in the gun... those steel plates HATE me... What i wish is there was no magazine cap restrictions in Canada... would be so nice. When i went overseas to shoot i hardly had to reload with a 21 round magazine :D - shot open then though.

Though in total? I'd prefer 10 magazines, rotate through them all as you never know when one magazine starts acting up.

4 mags on belt,..one in gun,...one as a stripper mag. 5 will do it with out a stripper mag,...but 6 is better.

Extra mags would be good for days when your mags get lots of dirt or sand/mud in them,..then you can put those aside and use clean mags. It is also easier to load up all your mags,..and practice,.then load 5 mags at a time.
I think I have 11 mags for my tanfoglio stock2.

I say 4 is a minimum you need.
But those four has to be reliable mags, which will work every time.
It doesn't hurt to have one or two extra.
My belt has always four mags for every stage and one in gun.
When I look at guys running with 6 mags !!! I do :) :) :)

The Division doesn't really matter here, I have 5 mag's on the belt(will vary as required) 1 in the gun... 3-4 is what you will need most of the time.... but sometime 5-6 mag's is what you need just so you don't have to stand still reload depends on the set-up of the stage...I have never used a stripper mag, I load from my mag and replenish that rounds before I start.

I think we have something like 30'ish mag's....between 2 shooters :)

I have 28 mags for my 2 production guns. I normally take 10 or 12 to a match, unless the weather is bad or I know there will be a lot of mud/water pits, then I'll bring about 20. It's easier to drop the dirty/muddy one into a ziploc baggie and retrieve a new one for the next stage.

You'll need to take into account that you will be dropping mags and they will need to be cleaned or replaced, that you might mishandle a mag and drop it, and that steel plates often activate their force field and require extra rounds to bring them down.

:D I have definitely noticed that some of the plates are force field equipped!

When I was running competitions I would frequently set up three speedshoots that you would shoot in a row, going hot from one to the next. It's a very fast way to run a range but competitors need at least five magazines.

I have 6 on the belt and a full stripper mag plus I normally start with a loose round in the pocket. Never yet run out or had to top up during a hot move between stages.

I'd like to double that number for foul weather or dusty ranges.
