I just got a brand new Remington 597. What should I do to it before going shooting. Can I shoot it fresh out of the box, or do I have to do some cleaning?

With every new or used gun I take it apart, check everything very carefully, clean it to the point of fault if it is used, oil it well, function it with no shells, check trigger function/sticking points etc, and then if everything is god it goes to the range. I am breaking 2 new guns in tomorrow, my Norc M14 and Russian SKS.

I also do a complete strip of the gun and inspect and clean it. As an added bonus you will learn alot about the firearm too.

Not Norc bashing but these guns I (in my humble opinion) really need a good once over to be sure all is good.

I just put a few rounds through my SKS and M14 today with perfect function except for the fact that if you want to keep the brass to reload the SKS good luck finding it. Man it spits it all over the place.
Get real familiar with the function and how the gun is built and any quirks it is suposed to have or NOT have and then go out and shoot it off till your hearts content.
