Well just finished butchering many hundreds of pounds of meat from the small bull we took last week. I put a hole through his lungs with the 358 Norma. Unfortunately I was using regular 250 Speer bullets and the jacket shed. It still wrecked the lungs so no real harm done but it should have broke the far shoulder. Next time it's back to Partitions for me.. My hunting buddy also found his lungs with his 308. The moose ran off 25 yards and fell down kicking. The Federal 180 grain bullet also stopped in the far shoulder. It held together pretty nicely but cuts a much narrower track.

Not much meat wasted, a good clean kill, great meat and boon companions in the wilderness. Not too shabby.

Awesome, congrats. Soft points will work, but they will also shed. For the few $$ extra I'll use a premium for moose. No reason not to...

If you only use them for hunting, a box of 50 will last you several years...

Looks like a great, fun hunt. mmmmm moose roast. Thanks for posting the pics.

We check all bullets before hunting with them. We fill up a bunch of milk jugs with water, and use a tightly packed box of newspaper for a final catcher. It really varies how many jugs you have to use, and we shoot into them from 60-80 yds, so a flyer tells you nothing, but you'll be very surprised at how different bullets do.
Basically heres what we've found: hawks and nosler partitions are pretty tough to beat. The partitions win in accuracy, but the unbelievable expansion, weight retention, and penetration of the hawks counts for an awful lot. Interlocks are consistant and hold together well, but don't have the expansion or penetration of the first 2.
Some other brands consistantly fail miserably, and I do mean consistantly miserably. Not that they won't necessarily complete the job, but why use a tool you know is inferior?
This year we're going to check some not so hard cast bullets against the first two. I've got a sneaking hunch a good bullet need not cost a buck a piece.

Suka I know it. I have tested most 35 bullets fairly extensively. I know the Speer can and does lose it's jacket on test media. However it has a great reputation in the Yukon by a group of 358 Norma moose hunters. It didn't fail, after all it penetrated the depth of the moose and absolutely liquified lung tissue on the way. It penetrated the off rib cage with a very nice However a Nosler Partition would have exited and left a good size blood trail. I'll use it from here on. The Speer would be an almost ideal caribou bullet however.

Great job of butchering and handling the meat.
A moose from a cold country, with short summers and long, tough winters, is as good as it gets.

nice moose, i haven't seen a damn thing in a while

Thanks Bud.

Next year on the Canol Trail you'll make up for it. If I lose 50 pounds on the ski trail I''ll come with you. Sounds great.

Here in Inuvik the place is thick with Moose. Unfortunately with all the land claims the opportunity for long term non-native Northerners is shrinking. Might need to move to the Yukon in the next 5 years.

To quote an old Texas Playboy song, "Down the river and across the bend" (I don't want to be too specific I might go back next weekend)

Man you are close! Moved here to Inuvik in January from Hay River.

Don't worry, I'll stick to my side of the river - only because I can't completely abandon the post to go shoot a moose!

Besides, there's lots of moose to go around up here.

Edited to add - I've consulted the regs. Looks like I'm coming to your side after all! Oh well, I'll have to wait until the road goes in.
