Hey folks I just received notice that National Wild Turkey Federation is pulling out of Canada, received a copy of the letter this week. It is too bad as they did a magnificent job along with other orgs reintroducing the Wild turkey. If any of these groups are looking for ways to continue you might consider Safari Club International Canada chapters to replace the NWTF chapters. With SCI-Canada chapters you keep 70% of the money raised at your annual event and spend it on local projects. You keep 100% of money raised at any other events you hold annually. Think of the great things you can do locally!! Lots of benefits come with having your own chapter as well, I can be reached at 613-687-4775 or email jstmichael@safariclub.org if you have questions or are interested

Always wondered why we have to be branch of this type of group ? Should be looking after our own interests first, obviously they do.

Went to one banquet and when i found out the amount of money that went back to the US compared to what the US invested in Canada i never went to another banquet and did not renew my membership...good ridance i say!

I got a letter to from them and they sited something having to do with being re-classed for taxes in Canada. They wrote some fluff about continuing to devote its interests to North America. I wrote them back and was shocked how quickly they replied. I asked if "North America" was actually still going to include Canada or just the states like so many other programs. She gave me a very wishy washy answer that didn't really answer if they would continue to support Canada without having chapters here. Sounds to me basically that it wasn't going to be as profitable up here so they pulled out. Nothing to do with conserving wildlife, just an American business looking out for itself. I definitely won't be renewing my membership when it comes due.

Why'd they pull out?

They lost their tax free status. Under audit it was found that they were raising lots of money here, but it was being pipelined into the US, and very little of it was actually being used for Canadian projects/ initiatives. One of the more important factors if you're trying to get out of paying taxes on it.

DU founded DU Canada for this very reason.

That is exactly the reason I never attended any of their events in Ontario and especially when they were trying to start a chapter in North Bay a few years back. The chances of Wild Turkeys being able to keep a toe hold that far north in such poor habitat for them to me was a waste of my time and money.
The fellow setting it up from the Federation would not answer my questions about where the money from a chapter in North Bay would go when there was basically little to no bird population in the area at the time.
