NYPD handguns, S&W 5946 winner

Have one,

fired upwards of 10,000 rounds through it, never jammed, no issues, easy to clean, accurate and reliable. Negatives, heavier than most, no rails - dont need anyhow - and 12 pound trigger pull - nothing some practice didnt fix.

I have zero issue with this pistol and have fired a good cross section of others.

My two cents.....

The Smith 5946 is a very good pistol. Incredibly reliable and very accurate. Its trigger takes considerable practice, but if you are willing to put in a few hours here and there dry firing, it is very manageable. It is heavy, but remember it is a steel gun. The departments that are transitioning to the M&P are doing so for a number of reasons, first off, Smith and Wesson is basically giving them the guns in the deal, but are making the profit back with the parts and service contracts - which are proving to be astronomically priced. The 5946 can be serviced every few thousand rounds and it keeps ticking along. I would buy one if they weren't prohib - just to have one.

I want one bad 5946 is a beautiful piece, steel 9mm are where it's at. I've seen a few on CGN with new barrel to make it restricted. Seen prices over 1200 for the gun.

Department orders are all frighteningly low priced - the last order I heard about from Glock ended with a final price per pistol+ 3 mags of $178. As far as maintenance contracts go, with guns like the M&P and Glock, let's face it, there's not a lot going on there, so there has to be some give and take (mostly take) in the service department. The long term advantage of the M&P lies in it's rebuildability - a single serialized M&P frame can last virtually forever, in normal use that part is under very little stress. A one hour rebuild can render the gun in 'as new' working condition for very little cost - retail price of the parts is under $100.

As much as I like the Model 10, I must say that I prefer the 5946. There is just no replacement for the extra rounds, etc. and I shoot it every bit as accurate. I think that we need to maybe start a movement to promote members being able to buy their issued 5946's if they have carried them for 25 years or something. Sell them to us without their prohib barrels and we can get them rebarrelled ourselves.

Why not just drop the prohib nonsense. You likely got more of chance doing that then seeing any Cdn. gov't selling handguns to the public. Selling the guns to a distributor thence to a retailer, thence to the public would be less expensive to administer and have better optics. I am not so sure selling guns to police officers, active or retired, is top of mind with any political party right now.

Take Care
