So I'm really new to this whole "restricted" thing. So new that I have yet to even buy my first restricted firearm.

I'm on a bit of a restricted budget (ha ha!) so I have to be mindful of my purchases.

I've been told and I've read that a .22 is one of the best ways to learn to shoot handguns. However, I'd like to have a 9mm simply for the added "punch". (and so I'm not seen as a sissy with just a little .22) Actually, I'd like to have a .45, but the cost of ammo would probably be prohibitively expensive to do the amount of shooting that I'd like to see myself doing.

With this in mind, I'm thinking that an NZ-85 with a Kadet .22 conversion kit would "fit the bill", so to speak. This should keep the overall cost to $800 or so including taxes and few extra mags. I know that for slightly more I could have a "real" CZ-85, but then I wouldn't have the .22 option.

So what do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Are there better options for me that you can think of? How about the availability of Kadet conversion kits in Canada? I've looked around but can only seem to be able to find them in the US.

Any and all help appreciated.

Matthew

I will simply state that i am not a huge fan of Norinco so my opinion may be somewhat biased. From the sounds of things in your post you don't seem very sure of them as well all I can say is ask yourself one question before you make that investment.

Are you truly going to be happy with an NZ-85? or do you really want a CZ-85, are you settling for a NZ because it just happens to look the same and be cheaper. If you want it great but any hesitation I say save up and go for the real deal. Firearms are an investment and the only smart investment is in something you know you want and will enjoy for a very long time.

Now as for your real question i say defiantly stick with .22 to train with may seem sissy but it allows you to concentrate on all your fundamentals first, grip, trigger pull, sight alignment and follow through without having to deal with recoil and a possible flinch. The ability to also feed 1000 rounds through it without breaking your bank helps a lot to.

My personal suggestion buy a Ruger 22/45 usually only 300 bucks use that for awhile and save your money for a real CZ-85 by then you should have enough rounds down the barrel of our Ruger that when you switch over you should be able to handle the increased recoil with little issue. Just my two cents anyways.

The .22 conversion from CZ is really nice and it doesn not take much fitting.
I know that Williams can get the Kadet units.
If you save a bit longer and get the CZ 85 or even an SPO1 and the 22 conversion, you will be in good shape.

The NZ-85 biggest problem is that the price differance is not that great, meaning that it is not worth doing any real mods to it. The grips and the springs are easy to do and worthwhile, the sights aren't great but useable, I am tempted to put Novaks on mine. However if you get one it will serve you well and the money saved can be used for ammo, extra mags and a holster.

Personally, I'd spend the extra few bucks & get the real deal CZ with the conversion unit. I suspect you'll be glad you did in the long run...;)
