I read the responses to "Cutting double barrel shotgun down"
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74496
and I don't want to steal the thread, however my question is very simialer (sorry for the duplication)

I may purchase a Ruger Red Label which is being cut down by a reputable gunsmith due to muzzle damage to about 26" (a blowout I think).

As I see it if the vent rib, and barrel bridging is solid it should be a good skeet gun.
Aside from an inspection by me, a garuntee from the smith (of his work only) and a pattern test is there anything else I should be concerned with?
Is there anything generally or specificly I should look at or for?

Thanks,

Gary

You have two options if you would prefer not to have cylinder bores. A jug choke could be polished into one or both barrels, or the muzzles could be reamed and threaded for choke tubes.

I had an O/U Baikal about 15 years ago that had been cut back to 20in. barrels. No choke work done. We called it "Ivan the Terrible" and it worked quite well when shooting skeet. Hit as many clays with it as I would normally do with a Imp. cylinder bored gun.

There is actually a good chance that the barrels are thick enough to have them threaded/rethreaded for choke tubes. For thin barrels there are also thin wall choke tubes with a double thread to reduce the depth of thead cut.
A double thread should you be wondering is where instead of cutting one thread to say .030 deep, you cut it to half depth (.015) . This leaves a space between the grooves which you run a second thread through to half depth.
It requires a special tap but gives the same thread pitch and holding power with 1/2 the depth of metal cut into.
