O/U grease or oil?

Hey guys,

What do you guys use; grease or gun oil?

I'm currently using gun oil, a few drops here and there and a oiled patch to work it around the metal surfaces of the gun. I do notice it's quite light and runny so it can perhaps sneak it's way onto the stock or forend which may cause weakening of the wood.

What do you guys use; oil or grease? Have you ever had issues with oil weakening the wood?

FYI I just like to keep a film of oil on all the metal surfaces. Is it possible to over oil?

Grease. Synthetic Red Wheelbearing Grease.

Dose not run and hide in the heat. Will not run into and soften the wood.

Standard Hoppes on outside of gun and in forstock release.

White lithium on hinges and mech trigger reset pins.

Some will say its not the appropriate product, but it works for me, as it worked for my dad.

There has been a long debate about whether to use oil or grease on the hinge pins. I've used both and don't think it matters provided you clean off and replace the old lubricant after each outing. Elsewhere on an o/u I use oil sparingly and don't apply it directly but put a little oil on a rag and wipe the metal to prevent rust. Do not use petroleum-based lubricants on wood.

Lithium based grease, wiped off after use.
Some outfits like Berreta supply oil.

Grease on the pivot points and a drop of oil here and there. Less is more. Always clean old lube. It will only attract dirt and grit and end up being worse then no lube.

Ah great, thanks for the advice. I'll pick up some grease at the gun store, feels like gun oil wasn't as suitable as it was running off the metal parts.

I use Lithium grease on the hinge pivot points and on the choke tube threads. To protect the rest of the gun I spray G-96 on the metal parts and wipe off any excess. I find the G-96 doesn't attract grit/dirt and seems so far to offer fair rust protection.

You can get to anal on this issue. Common sense will dictate a little grease on the pivot points etc. and a light gun oil on the other areas. As long as the metal surfaces are not bone dry and seeing heavy use. Then again if shooting in very cold weather bone dry is good or with a bit of dry graphite.

Clean and lightly oil/grease the gun using common sense after each couple hundred rounds and your good to go with a good OU for many years.
