my buddy has a Mossburg O/U with a single trigger and recently when he pulls it both of the shells are fired off. Not quite sure of the model but IMO this is very dangerous! I will find out the model and get back. but in the mean time if anyone has any suggestions that would be great!

Has he had the butt stock off and tampered with the mechanics, I don't know if his gun has a mechanical or an enertia shift, both require a very deft gunsmith to adjust. These mechanisms can be put out of whack by as little as ovetightening the tang screw. If it is an inertia type the pendulum can be blocked by dirt or sawdust. My main question woulb be is it really doubling, and not single fires caused by flinch trigger pulls firing the second barrell? This problem can be verified by having another experienced person fire the gun if it works correctly then it's the shooter. But then again it could be a bad sear. It probably needs a trip to a Mossberg repair depot, I've seen at least one Winchester 101 so badly screwed up by bubbahing that it cost nearly as much to repair as the gun was worth. all the best art

Obviously neither you or your buddy should attempt to "fix" this.

My suggestion is to take it to a gunsmith. Tell him the problem.

You can do a test to assist in repairing it.

Do both barrels fire with one pull of the trigger all the time?

Do both hammers fall when the trigger is pulled and the gun empty?

Try and see if it matters which barrel is fired first.

As a young guy I had a side by side that often fired both barrels with one pull of the trigger. I had it back to the gunsmith a couple of times. I would pick it up a week later and it did the same thing... both of us were wondering what was going on. He would test it and it worked fine, then I would have a malfunction. I thought then I would do some serious testing. To make a long story short I found out that it doubled on me only with a magnum shot shell in the right barrel. The shock of a magnum shell was just enough to cause the other sear to slip... so while in full recoil of the first shell you got hit with the second one going off. 2 magnum 6's just destroy a pheasant by the way. I finished hunting that year with no magnum shells in the right barrel and had no problems. When I took the gun in after season it was easily fixed as the cause had been determined. A few years after that I took a two year course in gunsmithing and ended up working for several years at the same store where my old gunsmith had worked.

all good points will keep posted. I only know of it doing it with Kent fast steel 3" #1's. Cuz well lets face it anything but while waterfowling would just be foolish :)

My brother has a Franchi o/u that will double every time (guaranteed) if the barrel selector switch is changed when the safety is off.
Kind of unnerving until we figured out what the problem was. The solution was to select which barrel you wanted to fire first BEFORE releasing the safety.
Have your buddy try firing the gun after selecting barrels with safety on and off.

My brother's gun was made in 1960 and is getting a bit worn around the edges. It could probably use a visit to the "doctor" for a complete physical
