I have a BRNO over/under 12ga. With fixed/full choke barrels and I want to hunt deer with this gun. Is it safe to shoot slugs through these types of barrels or would normal buckshot be the better option?

Safe sure but both barrels likely won't hit the same point of aim with slugs. Make sure you pattern at ranges and find its max accurate range.

What type of distance you looking at shooting?

I shot buckshot for many years when I was in a shotgun deer area and got some very good patterns with a full choke and certain brands/pellet counts.

But 35 yards was about the best you could hope for and keep enough pellets in the vitals for a humane kill.

You can squeeze a rifled slug through a full choke "safely", but again, you may have to try a few different brands/weights before you find something you are happy with.

Take her to the range .shoot three slugs out of the top barrel and see how thy group. Then try the same with the bottom barrel. If one of the barrels patterns a nice group at 30 yards stick with that one and shoot aa few rounds of buck shot out of the other barrel and see what you get for a pattern. You should be able to get a except able deer gun out to 40 tp 50 yards. . Only wsy to tell us to give her a go ..Good luck. Dutch ps try the challenger slugs .

I lost track of how many old SxS doubles I bought and sold, looking for one to use as a poor man's double rifle with slugs. I tried them all with their original fixed chokes, and was surprised at how well some full-choke barrels shot slugs. Challengers and Tru-Balls seemed to be the best slugs overall.

As an aside, I sold off those doubles one at a time whenever I found a "better" one. One of them, a nice old Husquarna with really nice wood, went to a co-worker who had the same plans for it. He decided the steel butt plate was not quite soft enough, but by that time he had already cut the gun down to about 22 or 24 inches (so no chokes). I bought it back, tried it out...and the groups floored me! With Challengers each barrel shoots about 2 inches at 50 yards, and the best part is that the centres of the two groups are only about an inch apart at that distance. You need to shoot the two barrels at two different targets to even be able to distinguish the two groups. The gun never shot that well before the barrel cut. Definitely a keeper now.

I realize that is the term the ammunition company's use; but you do realize it's actually grooves designed to allow the slug to 'Squish' out of a choked bbl, correct? They impart no stabilizing spin to the slug, so they are advertising spin from days of old

thanks for the input gentlemen. I have been granted access to a large ranch near brooks for some pheasant hunting but I have my whitetail tag as well so I just want to be ready incase I see a buck I would like to take home. don't feel like carrying around a rifle and shotgun at the same time. will run some slugs through my gun and see what works the best.
