Oak for stock?

I would like to make (or at least try to make) a stock for a rifle... I know home depot sells oak and I was wondering if it was any sutable for what I need?

OR what wood should I be using?

Too heavy and too damned hard to work with.
Best bet is to locate semi inletted claro walnut stocks from one of the makers in the states, Boyds, etc. Most cases no problem shipping across the line. Start with something cheap so your not out of pocket much when you ruin a stock on your first attempt.

I was thinking walnut as well, but wan't sure where to find it...any Canadian stores cary it?

IMLUGGER, try E bay under Hunting,stocks .they have blanks of walnut from time to time,also semi finished stocks.Merry Christmas JITC

Epp's likely has stock blanks. Any blank won't be exactly cheap so you'll want to teach yourself stock making with some cheaper hard wood. A slab of birch or beech shouldn't cost too much.
There's always somebody around that is having a tree cut down. A 4 foot x 6" log of birch, beech or maple will do nicely. Get the bark off quickly and let the log dry for a year or so.
Like RockChucker says, oak is far too heavy. Some oaks(white, I think) splits as it dries too.
Forget E-Bay for anything. They financially support the people who think you should not be allowed to own any firearm.

Oak is typically very open grain and prone to cracking/splitting from recoil as well

From my research/question asking I have heard that Maple and Walnut are good choices

I don't really want a black or semi inletted stocks -will probably cost too much... Plus I have a different design in mind (vs your regular rifle stock)...

I guess I'll try to find a slab of Maple, Walnut or Birch as been suggested and take it from there

What are you making the stock for. I have a semi-inletted birch stock for a Remington 700 short action. Something I never got around to.
